84-Year-Old Accountant Plans to Work Until 100, Thrives on Purpose
Jane Way, an 84-year-old accountant from a suburb of Phoenix, is determined to continue her professional journey for as long as possible, aiming to work until her 100th birthday. Currently employed with the nonprofit organization Open Arms Home for Children, she works approximately 30 hours a week, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to her career despite facing several health challenges.
Way’s career began at the young age of seven in her parents’ restaurant. She later pursued a degree in accounting from Cal Poly, where she became the first woman invited to recruit students for CPA firms. After two years at a prominent Big 8 firm, she became a certified public accountant, a title she upheld for an impressive 46 years across various roles, including franchising and retail.
In 1987, Way became a widow and took on the challenges of managing a high-ranking CFO position in an international franchisor of rental equipment and party goods. Following her husband’s death, she transitioned to contract work and eventually focused on nonprofit organizations, primarily in the last 12 years. Her current role with Open Arms Home for Children allows her to contribute to an orphanage based in South Africa.
Work as a Lifeline
Way’s work routine is uniquely structured around time zone differences, as her 9 a.m. corresponds to the end of the day in South Africa. Her workday begins at 11 p.m. and ends at 8 a.m., supplemented by daytime tasks that require less supervision.
“I thrive on work and need to be doing something to make things better for people,” Way shared. “For me, work is its own reward, and it keeps my thoughts fresh.” She has attempted retirement multiple times but found herself unable to step away from her professional responsibilities.
Financial necessity plays a role in her motivation. After supporting two grandchildren through college and having spent her retirement savings early, Way relies on both her Social Security and her nonprofit income. “This is what I chose to do,” she stated, highlighting her proactive approach to her financial situation.
Health Challenges and Family Support
Way acknowledges her health issues but prefers to focus on her contributions rather than her limitations. “You don’t reach 84 without facing some health challenges,” she noted. For the past five years, she has been in a wheelchair, which restricts her mobility outside her home. Nevertheless, she stays connected with the world through her work and family.
Living with her son, who has been disabled since a stroke in 2016, and her grandson has created a supportive living environment. “It has gone very well. Everybody takes care of their own stuff, and I do most of the cooking,” she explained. This arrangement allows them to share expenses while providing each other with companionship and assistance.
Way’s commitment to her work continues even after recovering from a serious health setback due to COVID-19 in 2023, during which she spent nearly two weeks hospitalized. She remains optimistic about her contributions to Open Arms and hopes to continue working with the organization for the next decade.
Reflecting on life, Way emphasizes the importance of pursuing happiness through work and community engagement. “Find a field you enjoy, and it won’t be work,” she advised. She acknowledges some regrets about not cultivating deeper relationships, yet she cherishes the friendships formed throughout her career.
In closing, Way reminds others of the significance of resilience in the face of challenges. “The most important thing is to be true to yourself and do what you want to do,” she said. Her journey illustrates that age is not a barrier to productivity and that purpose can be found in continued engagement and contribution to society.
