LiveScore Bet Exits Bulgaria by 2025 Amid UK Tax Increases
LiveScore Malta Limited has announced its decision to withdraw the LiveScore Bet brand from Bulgaria, with plans to cease operations in the country by the end of 2025. This strategic exit is prompted by significant tax increases introduced in the recent UK government’s 2025 Autumn Budget, alongside ongoing regulatory uncertainties within Bulgaria’s gambling sector.
The company’s review of its international operations revealed that the increased rates for both Remote Gaming Duty and General Betting Duty in the UK have created a challenging environment for gambling companies. LiveScore Malta cited the potential for further tax hikes in Bulgaria, aimed at addressing the nation’s budget deficit, as a key factor influencing its decision.
Implications of Regulatory Changes
In a formal statement, LiveScore emphasized the need to focus its resources for long-term resilience, stating, “The refocusing of resources ensures LiveScore Group remains robust and agile for the future.” As part of this transition, the company has informed all affected employees, who will enter a confidential consultation process. LiveScore plans to communicate directly with its customers in Bulgaria regarding the upcoming changes.
Starting in April 2026, Bulgaria will implement a new online casino tax rate of 40%, with additional hikes for sports betting planned for the following year. This has prompted various operators in the region to reassess their market strategies, with some considering the sale of customer databases or entire brands.
Concerns regarding employment and responsible gambling have been voiced by industry representatives. Grainne Hurst, Chief Executive of the Betting and Gaming Council, remarked, “Massive tax increases for online betting and gaming announced in the Budget make them among the highest in the world, and are a devastating hammer blow to tens of thousands of people working in the industry across the UK, and millions of customers who enjoy a bet.”
Industry-wide Reactions and Future Strategies
The broader implications of these tax increases have prompted other companies, such as evoke Plc, to initiate formal reviews of their operations. As the UK gambling sector faces mounting pressures from regulatory changes and economic challenges, businesses are increasingly compelled to adapt their strategies swiftly.
LiveScore’s exit from Bulgaria reflects a growing trend in the gambling industry as companies navigate a complex landscape characterized by both heightened taxation and shifting regulatory frameworks. The company’s decision underscores the importance of strategic planning in maintaining operational agility in these uncertain times.
As the situation evolves, stakeholders in the gambling sector will be closely monitoring market responses and regulatory developments, which will undoubtedly shape the future of operations across Europe.
