Zohran Mamdani to Be Sworn in by Bernie Sanders on January 1

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has announced that he will be publicly sworn in by Senator Bernie Sanders during his inauguration ceremony on January 1, 2024. The event will feature a dual swearing-in, with New York State Attorney General Letitia James also officiating at midnight. According to Mamdani’s transition team, the formal ceremony is set to take place at 1 p.m. the same day.

Mamdani expressed his admiration for both leaders, stating it is “an honor to be sworn in by two leaders I have admired for years.” He praised Attorney General James for her commitment to justice, saying, “She has taken on powerful interests in her defense of New Yorkers and embodied the principle of equal justice before the law.” He further commended Sanders for his foundational role in the progressive movement, emphasizing his dedication to the dignity of working people.

The inauguration is expected to attract significant public interest, with around 4,000 tickets issued for the ceremony. A block party on Broadway, running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day, will be open to all residents and visitors.

Recently, Catherine Almonte Da Costa, an appointee, resigned after controversial posts from her past surfaced, including anti-Semitic comments. Senator Sanders weighed in on Mamdani’s election, stating, “At a moment when democracy is under attack and cynicism about our politics runs deep, Zohran Mamdani represents a new generation of progressive leadership rooted in courage, integrity, and solidarity.” He noted that Mamdani’s victory signifies a broader working-class movement and asserted, “The future of New York belongs to the people, not the billionaire class.”
