Trump-Backed Nasry Asfura Wins Honduras Presidential Election

In a closely watched election, Nasry Asfura, a candidate backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, emerged victorious in Honduras’ presidential race held on November 30, 2023. According to electoral authorities, Asfura of the conservative National Party received 40.27% of the vote, narrowly defeating his rival, Salvador Nasralla, who garnered 39.53%. This election highlights a continuing rightward shift in Latin American politics, following Chile’s recent selection of far-right politician José Antonio Kast as president.

Asfura, who previously served as the mayor of the capital city Tegucigalpa, achieved this victory in his second attempt for the presidency. The vote count, which lasted several weeks and raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process, saw Asfura and Nasralla neck and neck until the results were finalized. Following the announcement of the election results, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Asfura, stating, “The people of Honduras have spoken… The Trump administration looks forward to working with his administration to advance prosperity and security in our hemisphere.” The European Union and various right-leaning leaders across Latin America, including Argentine President Javier Milei, also extended their congratulations.

Controversy surrounded the election process, with Nasralla alleging fraud and accusing electoral officials of betraying the Honduran populace. He expressed his concerns directly to Trump, questioning the legitimacy of Asfura’s victory and suggesting that the late endorsement from the former president constituted electoral interference.

The election was marred by a sluggish vote count, which lasted over three weeks, further fueling accusations of irregularities. The Organization of American States (OAS) had previously expressed concern regarding the delays. In a statement on social media, OAS Secretary General Albert Rambin noted that the organization was “closely following events in Honduras” and condemned the announcement of results while the final 0.07% of votes remained uncounted.
