Downey Supper Club Fosters Community Connections Through Dining

A new initiative in Downey, California, is bringing people together through the simple act of sharing meals. The Downey Supper Club, founded by Janet Teal Minnig, offers a welcoming environment for individuals looking to forge connections while supporting local businesses. The club meets once a month and has rapidly grown from a casual gathering to a thriving community event.

The concept emerged when Minnig, feeling hesitant to dine alone, decided to reach out to others. In the summer of 2023, she posted an invitation on Facebook for an inaugural dinner at the local Sizzler restaurant. “Does anybody want to go to dinner with me at the Sizzler for the grand opening? If you do, join the Downey Supper Club,” she wrote. To her surprise, many responded, and the group began to take shape.

As the club expanded, it attracted a diverse range of participants. Carl True, a regular attendee, shared his experience: “I was at another restaurant having dinner by myself, and Jan from this group dragged me over to the big table of people.” He noted that the group’s size has dramatically increased in just a few months. “That was four months ago. Since then, I’ve been to every event.”

Newcomers like Kay Rodriguez are also discovering the joy of community dining. “This is my first night here. I’ve been aware of the supper club for quite some time but haven’t been able to get here,” she said. “Now it’s so much fun.”

The club operates under straightforward principles: support local businesses and ensure that no one dines alone. This mission resonates deeply with local establishments like Chris & Pitts BBQ Restaurant. Co-president Debbie Pelonis Berry expressed her gratitude, stating, “It’s tough to compete with the big chains. This is a huge win, and I am incredibly thankful to Jan for choosing us.”

Minnig emphasizes the importance of connection through shared meals. “You don’t have to talk, but you have to sit with us. It just kind of pulls people in and pulls them out of their shell.” She has witnessed significant transformations among attendees, noting how some who initially felt shy have become more outgoing and engaged. “We’ve had some people that have come in that have been so painfully bashful, and now they walk in and they’re hugging everyone.”

The invitation to join the supper club is open not only to residents of Downey but also to individuals from surrounding areas. The initiative underlines the value of human connection and community support in an increasingly disconnected world.
