Christmas has concluded, but the shopping season in the Aurora area continues to thrive as consumers flock to local malls and shopping centers seeking post-holiday sales and opportunities to redeem gift cards. On the morning of December 26, 2025, families were out in force, eager to make the most of their holiday gifts.

At a Target store located at 3885 E. Main St. in St. Charles, Michael Shake from West Chicago was on a mission with his family. “We’re here so my daughter can spend her Christmas cash,” Shake explained as he prepared to enter the store with his wife, Jenna, and their six-year-old daughter, Ellie. Ellie had received money from her great-grandmother, and she was clear about her goal: “I want a safety mask so I can play with my Nerf guns,” she stated excitedly.

Retailers view the week following Christmas as a significant period for sales as shoppers seek items they did not receive as gifts or look for bargains. At the nearby Fox Valley Mall, Kristina Arias, the senior director of marketing, noted that the post-Christmas shopping atmosphere differs from the pre-holiday rush. “Shopping shifts from urgency to choice,” she said.

Arias elaborated, explaining that the post-Christmas period allows shoppers more time to consider their purchases without the pressure that often accompanies holiday shopping. “They want to feel confident in spending on what they actually want, especially after the holidays. Those deals make the purchases feel smarter and intentional,” she added.

With many people still on vacation, the mall is expected to remain busy. Arias emphasized the importance of thoughtful spending during this time, as customers take advantage of promotions and compare options. “Exchanges and gift cards create a sense of flexibility for customers,” she explained. This flexibility often encourages shoppers to spend additional money beyond their gift cards, increasing overall sales for retailers.

Another shopper, Bernie Saad from Bartlett, expressed her family’s objectives for the day: “We are in search of Christmas lights and wrapping paper.” Her husband, William, mentioned that they had already cashed in gift cards at Menard’s and were ready for more shopping. “The kids got some cash from relatives, so that might be part of the day,” he added.

Lenny Jaimes, the manager at the Michael Kors store within the Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora, anticipates a busy stretch ahead. “This has been an active shopping season this year, and I expect it to continue,” Jaimes said. He noted that while many customers will use gift cards, they are also looking for items that may have been restocked after the holidays. “Most who come in are using gift cards, and some are here to see if we have more stock than we did in the lead-up to Christmas,” he stated.

Julie Anderson, visiting the outlet mall from Manhattan, had already exchanged a purse and was looking for further bargains. “When I’m out like this, I’m looking around for bargains mostly,” she commented.

Kenika Carter-Aldridge from Chicago also visited the Chicago Premium Outlets on that Friday, drawn by the variety of stores and the hope for lower prices. “I prefer to wait until after Christmas to really see what I want instead of just getting something and being done,” she shared, highlighting a common sentiment among holiday shoppers.
