Sports Surge as Top Dating Trend for Singles in 2026
New research highlights a significant shift in how singles are seeking romantic connections. According to a recent study by **Feeld**, a dating app that caters to open-minded lifestyles, engaging in sports and physical activities is emerging as a popular avenue for finding love in 2026. The findings reveal that younger generations, particularly **Gen Z** and millennials, are increasingly integrating organized sports into their social lives as a means to meet potential partners.
The study indicates that an interest in sports has become a vital social currency among singles. Dr. **Luke Brunning**, a lecturer in applied ethics and co-director of the Centre for Love, Sex and Relationships at the **University of Leeds**, stated that “an emphasis on experiences, being sociable and forging intimacy through structured activities and clubs” explains the growing vocalization around sports among singles. Dr. Brunning also noted the increased representation of women in sports and the cultural focus on wellness and fitness as factors contributing to this trend.
Surge in Sports Interest Among Younger Singles
The report reveals that eight of the top ten fastest-growing interests among Gen Z pertain to sports. Notably, there has been an astounding increase in enthusiasm for activities such as tennis, football, and basketball, with interest levels soaring between **300% and 600%**. Soccer, in particular, experienced a spike of nearly **600%**, while other sports like basketball, running, and swimming saw increases around **350%**.
Tennis has notably captured attention this year, with its popularity reflected in the **U.S. Open**’s innovative approach to matchmaking. During the tournament, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center produced a YouTube series titled “**Game, Set, Matchmaker**,” featuring couples paired up to test their compatibility as doubles partners. Alana Glenn Moritz, the creative director for Fresh Tape Media, described the series as “unexpected” and “current,” aiming to capture the cultural energy of the U.S. Open.
The **Ryder Cup** in September further showcased this trend. Reports emerged of single women abandoning dating apps to attend the golf tournament in search of eligible bachelors. Comedian **Heather McMahan** encouraged her listeners to head to Bethpage, emphasizing the potential for meeting new people. One attendee, **Colleen Griparich**, expressed her excitement, stating, “I probably could see 500 or 600 men at one time.”
Pickleball and Run Clubs as New Dating Venues
The rise of **pickleball** has also contributed to this dating phenomenon. In **New York City**, pickleball courts have become vibrant social hubs, attracting younger singles eager to connect. The sport’s casual nature allows players to engage with strangers, fostering opportunities for interaction and flirtation on the court.
Run clubs, often touted as the “new Tinder,” have long been a popular choice for active singles. Dr. **Zac Turner** highlighted that organized sports facilitate connections through “shared suffering,” making it easier for participants to bond over common experiences. Moreover, the relaxed attire typical in these settings eliminates the stress of first-date outfit decisions, allowing for authentic interactions.
In conclusion, the findings from Feeld underscore a transformative approach to dating that prioritizes shared activities and community engagement. As sports continue to gain traction as a viable avenue for connection, the landscape of modern romance appears set for a dynamic evolution, especially among younger generations.
