GigaBite Robotics Team Seeks Donations to Boost Local STEM Programs

GigaBite Robotics, a community-based team of middle and high school students from South Lake Tahoe, is reaching out for financial support to expand its STEM initiatives. The team, known as FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Team 20681, is dedicated to providing hands-on opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for local students.

In its fifth year of competition, GigaBite Robotics aims to enhance its impact this season, which includes the challenge titled “Decode.” This initiative has driven the team to focus on data-driven design, custom computer-aided design (CAD) mechanisms, and the seamless integration of software and hardware. The team’s efforts have already resulted in significant achievements, including mentoring a rookie FIRST Lego League (FLL) team that received the Rising Stars Award and advanced to the Northern Nevada Championship.

Over the past year, the GigaBite Robotics team has been instrumental in engaging dozens of local children in STEM education. Their activities include teaching at STEM camps and workshops, as well as hosting community events designed to introduce younger students to robotics, engineering, and coding.

Expanding Opportunities for Local Students

GigaBite Robotics has made strides in fostering a culture of Gracious Professionalism, which emphasizes collaboration and respect in competitive settings. The team actively supports younger teams, not only within South Lake Tahoe but also across Nevada and internationally. Their outreach extends to volunteering at FTC and FLL competitions and hosting a local scrimmage, which showcases their commitment to community engagement.

Additionally, GigaBite Robotics collaborates with local educational institutions, including Lake Tahoe Community College, to organize events like STEM Discovery Night. Over the past three summers, the team has taught more than 500 students through hands-on STEM camps and outreach programs, reinforcing their mission to make STEM education accessible to all.

Support and Funding Needs

To sustain and expand these initiatives, GigaBite Robotics is seeking donations to cover essential expenses. Contributions will directly support costs associated with robot parts, 3D printing filament, registration and competition fees, tools, travel, and outreach programs. The team emphasizes that financial barriers should not prevent interested students from pursuing STEM opportunities.
