Puppets Rock Out in MTG’s New Lorwyn Eclipsed Set
Wizards of the Coast has unveiled a unique promotional video for its upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, Lorwyn Eclipsed, featuring a rock opera performed by puppets. This innovative approach, developed in collaboration with The Jim Henson Company, showcases a dramatic narrative centered on themes of identity and duality, key elements of the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor lore.
The video was revealed during a WeeklyMTG livestream, representing a departure from the traditional trailers often seen with new Magic sets. While previous promotions included 3D animations and stylized 2D visuals, the puppet rock opera brings a fresh, theatrical flair to the game’s marketing. It explores the contrasting worlds of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor, where inhabitants experience a cyclical shift between light and dark, often unaware of the existence of the other side.
Brian Henson, a creative force behind the project, highlighted the emotional depth of the characters Squen and Cragg, two Boggarts from the respective realms. During a recent video call, he explained that the duo’s musical interaction serves as a metaphor for the deep longing each feels to understand the other half of their world. “The metaphor is that it’s these two parts in all of us,” Henson stated, emphasizing the connection between the characters’ struggles and broader human emotions.
The performance reflects the essence of a rock opera, drawing inspiration from theatrical works like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Henson encouraged the puppeteers, including notable performers such as Kevin Clash, to embrace a commanding presence on stage, intensifying the emotional delivery of the characters. The result is a vibrant and engaging portrayal of existential themes, set against a backdrop of fantastical puppetry.
The narrative explores a world where the main conflict is not rooted in physical confrontation but rather in identity and existential inquiry. As Neale LaPlante Johnson, the world-building lead for the set, explained, the exploration of what it means to live in a place of incompleteness is central to the design of Lorwyn Eclipsed. The characters reflect the notion that two versions of the same being can represent two halves of a singular identity, each yearning for the other.
The puppet-driven narrative is complemented by game mechanics that embody this duality. For instance, hybrid mana allows players to cast spells representing two distinct color identities, while certain cards can physically transform, echoing the thematic exploration of identity within the set. These mechanics help convey the complex interplay of light and dark that characterizes the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor narrative.
Additionally, the artistic direction for the set aligns with the project’s overall vision of creating a textured, emotionally resonant world. Art director Deborah Garcia emphasized the importance of crafting illustrations that feel tangible and “puppety,” steering away from overly polished digital aesthetics. This approach aims to capture the unique charm of the original design while infusing it with a fresh vibrancy.
Garcia noted the challenge of maintaining a sense of material strangeness in the illustrations, particularly for creatures like the Boggarts, whose varied designs emphasize their fantastical nature. The aim was to create a visual experience that complements the emotive storytelling presented in the puppet rock opera.
As the Lorwyn Eclipsed set prepares for its launch in March 2024, the combination of puppetry, music, and innovative narrative techniques sets a new benchmark for how Magic: The Gathering engages its audience. The approach underscores the potential for storytelling within the gaming world, inviting players to explore deeper emotional connections through the lens of fantasy.
