Beloved Community Leader Michael Schliebe Passes Away at 70

Michael Edward Schliebe, a respected husband, brother, and friend, passed away on December 7, 2025, following a brief battle with esophageal cancer. He was 70 years old and died in his home in Puyallup, WA, surrounded by his wife, Cyndy Schliebe.

Born on January 29, 1955, in Long Beach, CA, Mike was the son of Milton Edward and Shirley Ann Schliebe (Davis). His family was deeply involved in their local community, attending First Lutheran Church, where Mike cultivated a passion for music and service. He was known for his remarkable singing voice and participated actively in the church choir. Over the years, Mike contributed to various ministries, playing handbells and serving on church leadership boards. His role as church treasurer spanned many years, reflecting his commitment to the community.

Mike’s life took a significant turn when he met Cyndy Wick in 1971, shortly after she joined First Lutheran. Their friendship blossomed through church activities, leading to their marriage in 1979. Together, they built a life in Long Beach, where Mike embarked on a distinguished career with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. Initially recruited from a successful position with McKesson Office Supplies in 1986, Mike served in various capacities at the Lomita Sheriff’s Station. He ultimately found his niche as the early morning dispatcher and watch deputy, a role he cherished until his retirement in 2016.

After retirement, Mike and Cyndy relocated to the Pacific Northwest, where they embraced new hobbies and adventures. A passionate golfer, Mike discovered the sport of curling and became a dedicated participant in local leagues, often curling on Friday nights. His adventurous spirit also extended to SCUBA diving and skiing, where he was known for his engaging “Ski Talk” videos produced by the Lutheran Men’s Beer Drinking League.

Travel was a significant aspect of Mike and Cyndy’s life together. They explored North America and embarked on numerous ocean cruises, creating lasting memories. One of the highlights of their travels included a National Geographic cruise to Antarctica, where the couple participated in the memorable “Polar Plunge” into the icy waters.

Mike is survived by his wife Cyndy, his brother Steve, sister Kim Biondo (Vito), and several nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his infectious laughter and warm spirit.

With First Lutheran Church having closed its doors, Mike’s memorial service will take place at Bethany Lutheran Church, located at 4644 Clark Ave., Long Beach, CA, on January 10, 2026, at 13:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Samaritans Purse (World Medical Missions or International Crisis Response), Tunnel to Towers, or the Wounded Warriors Project.

As the community mourns the loss of Michael Schliebe, he is remembered not only for his faith and service but also for his enduring impact on those around him. His life was a testament to love, adventure, and unwavering faith. He is now in the presence of God, embraced by the knowledge he shared and the love he cultivated throughout his life.
