Chicago’s Historic January 6: From Playoff Heartbreak to Capitol Riot
On January 6, pivotal events have shaped Chicago’s history, particularly in 2019 and 2021. The day is marked by both a heart-wrenching playoff moment for the Chicago Bears and a significant incident in American politics resulting in the storming of the U.S. Capitol.
Playoff Disappointment for the Bears
On January 6, 2019, the Chicago Bears faced the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFC Wild Card playoff game at Soldier Field. The Bears led 15-10, thanks to a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mitch Trubisky to wide receiver Allen Robinson with just over nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Bears’ defense made a valiant effort, stopping the Eagles on three consecutive plays from the 2-yard line in the game’s final moments.
As the clock dwindled, the Eagles regained the lead with a touchdown pass from quarterback Nick Foles to Golden Tate on a fourth-and-goal with only 1:01 left. Following a 35-yard kickoff return by Tarik Cohen, Trubisky quickly moved the Bears into field-goal range. Kicker Cody Parkey initially converted a 43-yard attempt, but a timeout by the Eagles forced a re-kick. In a moment that would haunt Bears fans, Parkey’s second attempt hit the left upright and then bounced off the crossbar, a play that became known as the “double doink.” The Bears lost the game 16-15, ending their playoff run and marking a painful moment in franchise history.
Capitol Riot and Arrests
Fast forward to January 6, 2021, a date that would become infamous across the United States. On this day, supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of President-elect Joe Biden‘s victory in the 2020 election. The incident halted Congress’s proceedings and led to nationwide unrest.
According to reports, more than 1,500 individuals were arrested across all 50 states and the District of Columbia as part of the investigation into the Capitol breach. Prosecutors have described this investigation as one of the largest criminal probes in American history. In a controversial move following his inauguration in January 2025, Trump issued pardons to many involved in the Capitol riot.
Amid this turmoil, at least 49 individuals from Illinois were charged in connection with the uprising. This legal action reflects the significant consequences stemming from the events of that day, highlighting the ongoing impact on both state and national levels.
A Look Back at Chicago’s Weather and Milestones
Weather has also played a notable role in January 6 history. On the same date in 1918, Chicago experienced a blizzard that resulted in 14.9 inches of snow, becoming one of the largest snowfalls recorded in the city. The storm created hazardous conditions, with reports of drifts up to six feet high and significant disruptions to transportation and communication. Even with the mobilization of 2,200 laborers and various snow-clearing equipment, the city struggled to maintain order, prompting calls for extra help from local residents.
In a different context, on January 6, 1976, Evelyn Carmon Nicol, a respected immunologist, received a U.S. patent for the production of urokinase. Nicol’s contributions to science as one of the few Black women to hold a patent in the field remain a testament to her pioneering spirit and dedication.
As Chicago reflects on these significant events, January 6 serves as a reminder of both triumphs and tribulations faced by the city and its residents throughout history. The Bears’ “double doink” continues to symbolize a moment of heartbreak, while the Capitol riot underscores the complexities of contemporary American society.
