Ben Affleck recently opened up about a significant moment in his career that he describes as a “massive embarrassment.” During an appearance on *Jimmy Kimmel Live* on January 5, 2026, the acclaimed actor and director reflected on being overlooked for an Oscar nomination in 2013 despite his film *Argo* winning multiple awards, including Best Picture.

While congratulating host Jimmy Kimmel for his recent win at the Critics Choice Awards, Affleck recalled the overwhelming anticipation leading up to the 2013 Oscars. He mentioned that he frequently heard from others that he was sure to receive a nomination for Best Director for *Argo*, which heightened the disappointment when his name was ultimately absent from the nominees’ list. “All of a sudden it’s a massive embarrassment. I woke up and people [told me], ‘You didn’t get nominated,’” he said.

Despite not earning a nomination for Best Director, *Argo* triumphed at the Oscars, taking home the award for Best Picture. Kimmel pointed out the irony of Affleck’s situation, noting, “You starred in it, and you directed it, and you were not nominated in either category for a film. Like it’s as if the movie directed itself.” Affleck agreed, acknowledging the absurdity of the situation.

Facing the Media After the Snub

Affleck described the difficult atmosphere at the Critics Choice Awards that followed his Oscar snub. He remembered the red carpet experience vividly, stating, “It seemed like there were 500 people dying to talk to me. Every single one of them was, ‘Hi. So the snub.’ Like what do you say to that?” The actor found himself in a challenging position, having to respond to questions about a nomination he did not publicly anticipate.

“I wasn’t the one going out there and being like, ‘I’m going to get it. I’m going to get nominated.’ So it was more kind of like having to be put through the ritual of then answering for why you didn’t get nominated,” he explained, adding that the situation felt particularly awkward.

Although the accolades for *Argo* did not fully alleviate the sting of the Oscars oversight, they did serve as a reminder of the film’s impact. Affleck’s candid recounting of the experience highlights the often unpredictable nature of award shows and the pressures that accompany them.

As Affleck continues to navigate his career, he is set to reunite with a close friend and frequent collaborator in an upcoming film. The actor’s willingness to reflect on his past experiences demonstrates his resilience in the face of disappointment and his ongoing commitment to his craft.
