In a thrilling encounter on October 31, 2023, Berkly Catton made a significant impact in his career, scoring two goals during the Seattle Kraken‘s 7-4 victory against the Boston Bruins. This marked a turning point for the 19-year-old, who had gone 27 games without a goal since being selected as the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Catton Breaks Goal Drought

Catton’s first career NHL goal came in a surprising manner during a three-on-two opportunity, just 2:48 into the second period. After receiving a pass from Jared McCann, he unleashed a one-timer from a challenging angle that slipped through the pads of Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman. “I didn’t even know it went in, to be honest,” Catton remarked. “I thought it hit the post.” When the goal horn sounded, the relief was palpable as Catton raised his arms in celebration, greeted by an enthusiastic McCann on the boards.

“It’s the best; I said, ‘Finally,’” McCann, who has been in the league for 11 years, said. “He’s been working really hard, and we were due.” The Kraken have high hopes for Catton, a former star with the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs, who made his NHL debut on October 20, 2023, earning his first point with an assist. Although he contributed with two more assists in his initial games, the elusive first goal had been a source of anxiety.

Coach and Teammates Praise Catton’s Efforts

Reflecting on the pressure of scoring, Catton stated, “Obviously I thought about it all the time, but I wouldn’t say it was really impacting me too much. But it’s just a relief more than anything to get it out of the way.” Following his first goal, he quickly added a second just 14 minutes into the third period. This time, he maneuvered a deft backhand shot over Swayman’s glove, assisted by Freddy Gaudreau.

“I thought it was awesome,” said Kraken coach Lane Lambert. “I’ve said a few times prior to now that once he scores, I think he’ll score a few.” Catton’s performance not only ended a personal scoring drought but also contributed significantly to the team’s success against a formidable opponent.

With this newfound momentum, Catton looks poised to continue making his mark in the NHL, and his teammates are excited to see what he will achieve next.
