Pennsylvania Man Arrested for Stealing Over 100 Human Remains

Authorities in Pennsylvania have arrested a man after discovering more than 100 stolen human remains in his home in Ephrata, leaving the local community in shock. The suspect, identified as Jonathan Gerlach, was apprehended in Delaware County while allegedly attempting to steal corpses from a cemetery in the Philadelphia area. Officials have linked his actions to a series of grave robberies at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon.

The unsettling nature of the case has led some officials to describe it as a “horror movie come to life.” Upon executing a search warrant at Gerlach’s unoccupied residence, investigators reported finding the remains stored in various boxes, as well as a burlap bag containing the mummified remains of two small children among other assorted bones.

Court documents indicate that investigators executed the search warrant after catching Gerlach in the act earlier this week. Neighbors reported witnessing police escorting Gerlach from his home and loading boxes filled with human remains into police vehicles.

Local resident Zach Root described the scene, stating, “It was all freaky because they’re taking, like, boxes upon boxes of human remains.” Investigators also discovered evidence of 26 underground vaults and mausoleums that had been broken into or damaged at Mount Moriah Cemetery following reports of theft.

The documents further revealed that authorities found three skulls and assorted bones, with some dating back hundreds of years. This has raised concerns among community members about the identification of the remains. “You know, people are not going to have the satisfaction of, ‘Is that my children’s remains?’” said neighbor Johnathan Wharton.

Residents expressed disbelief at the horrifying discovery happening in their own neighborhood. Kim Hackman, another neighbor, remarked, “There are kids that walk around and play here all the time, and it’s just very unnerving.” Many community members had previously interacted with Gerlach, recalling him as a friendly figure who walked his dog nearby.

The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office has indicated that Gerlach may have spent time at a local cemetery, although no reports of missing remains have surfaced to date. He faces a staggering total of 574 charges, which include burglary, trespassing, abuse of a corpse, theft, and intentional desecration of burial places.
