West Virginia Welcomes Key Transfers: Punter Bryan Hansen and Pass Rusher Harper Holloman

West Virginia University (WVU) has bolstered its football roster by securing commitments from punter Bryan Hansen and pass rusher Harper Holloman during the current transfer portal period. This marks an important step for the Mountaineers as they seek to strengthen their team ahead of the upcoming season.

Hansen, previously with Colorado State University, made his commitment public, which was soon followed by Holloman announcing his transfer from Western Kentucky University. Hansen joined the Rams as a walk-on in 2022 and, after redshirting, made significant contributions in subsequent seasons. In 2024, he played in all 13 games as the starting kickoff specialist, achieving 27 touchbacks out of 45 kickoffs.

His performance as a punter improved significantly in the 2025 season, where he averaged an impressive 47.89 yards per punt, ranking third in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Hansen recorded 57 punts, with 13 landing inside the 20-yard line and 23 exceeding 50 yards. His high net punting average of 44.2 yards highlights his effectiveness on the field, making him a crucial addition for a program that recently lost long-time punter Oliver Straw to graduation.

Defensive Boost with Holloman’s Commitment

Holloman has also made his mark in college football, demonstrating his potential during his time at Western Kentucky. In his true freshman season, he participated in eight games, recording nine total tackles, including one for a loss. His performance continued to improve in 2025, where he tallied 39 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks.

The addition of Holloman aligns with head coach Rich Rodriguez‘s vision to enhance the team’s defensive line. He is the second pass rusher acquired this offseason and joins a growing roster of young talent. Holloman’s eligibility allows for further development, which will be beneficial for the Mountaineers in the coming years.

Rodriguez’s strategy emphasizes building a robust defense, as shown by the addition of 49 new players to the 2026 freshman class. This recruitment drive follows a series of departures from the team, necessitating an influx of new talent. The defensive coordinator, Zac Alley, has made improving the team’s ability to penetrate opposing backfields a priority, and with the recent acquisitions, the Mountaineers are off to a promising start.

As the transfer portal remains open, WVU has already added 21 transfers in just one week, indicating a proactive approach to team building. The Mountaineers are positioning themselves to compete effectively in the upcoming season, aiming to capitalize on their new roster additions.
