Cambodian Laundry Industry Revealed Through the Lens of Artistry

In early February 2024, photographer Macy Castañeda Lee explored the outskirts of Siem Reap, Cambodia, uncovering a vibrant and often overlooked aspect of local life: the laundry industry. While attending the Angkor Photo Festival and Workshop, Castañeda Lee documented the laundry hanging along streets and riversides, revealing its deeper significance within the community.

As they rode through the lush rice and lotus fields, Castañeda Lee reflected on the visual impact of the laundry. “There was laundry everywhere,” they recalled. This seemingly mundane task embodies the economic and health standards of the Cambodian and Khmer people. The photographs taken during this journey highlight the often invisible laborers who facilitate the tourism industry by washing clothes for visitors.

Hidden Labor and Community Support

In a visit to the home of two Khmer brothers, Sothea and Bong Chea, Castañeda Lee learned how laundry serves a dual purpose. The brothers use hung garments as a makeshift barrier to ward off insects at night while also earning supplementary income by washing clothes for neighbors. This practice underscores the resourcefulness of local families navigating economic challenges.

Many families around the Siem Reap River engage in laundry work while balancing multiple businesses. Vonn Da Li Na and his wife operate both a hair salon and a laundry service, often spending hours tending to both. In a conversation with Castañeda Lee, Da Li Na expressed the joy his family finds in their work, sharing, “It is our work, along with the salon, so we just try to have fun with it.” Yet, he also acknowledged a desire for more efficient tools, such as a washing machine, to ease their daily burdens.

Environmental Challenges and Cultural Reflections

The Siem Reap River serves as a primary water source for many laundry businesses. Castañeda Lee noted the environmental implications of this practice, revealing that while it is a vital resource, it also raises concerns regarding sanitation. Honme Thana, a mother of three operating a laundry service south of the river, exemplifies this struggle. She relies on the river for water due to limited access in her community, stating, “She’s learning how to work with nature,” as she navigates these challenges.

Despite the hard labor involved, Castañeda Lee found a sense of serenity among the workers. “What calmed me throughout this project was that these people weren’t on their phones while waiting for the laundry,” they observed. This stillness often reflects the Buddhist principles of meditation and mindfulness prevalent in Cambodian culture. The photographer’s experiences shifted their perspective, revealing a community that embraces patience and diligence in their daily tasks.

As Castañeda Lee continues to explore the theme of laundry in Cambodia, they express a desire to return for a follow-up project. “It’ll evolve throughout the years,” they said, hinting at the changing dynamics of the community, but emphasizing that the essence of laundry will always reflect the hands of those who perform it.
