Francisco Lindor Faces Injury Challenge Ahead of Opening Day

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor is facing a potential setback as he experiences soreness in his left hamate bone. The situation has raised concerns about a possible stress reaction that may affect his availability for the upcoming MLB season opener. Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns confirmed that Lindor will undergo evaluation by a specialist, with results expected to dictate whether surgery is needed.

The Mets are set to begin their season against the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 26, 2024. If surgery is required, the typical recovery period is approximately six weeks, which would coincide closely with Opening Day. The team is already grappling with the implications of this injury, considering they have made significant changes to their infield lineup.

Lindor, who has been a consistent performer throughout his career, has not missed a game due to injury since joining the Mets in 2021. Over the last four seasons, he has played at least 152 games each year. In April 2021, he signed a lucrative 10-year, $341 million contract with the franchise. Last season, he showcased his skills by playing 160 games, posting a batting average of .267, alongside 31 home runs and 86 runs batted in, while also stealing 31 bases. His performance earned him a spot on the National League All-Star team and he finished 10th in the NL MVP voting.

The team has recently acquired Bo Bichette, who will play third base, traded for Marcus Semien for second base, and signed Jorge Polanco to man first base.
