Elisabeth Moss Stars in New Hulu Legal Thriller “Conviction”
Hulu is set to enhance its lineup with the legal thriller Conviction, marking a significant collaboration between author Jack Jordan and 20th Television. The series represents a strategic move for Hulu, which is focusing on character-driven narratives featuring established talent. This project is the first major outcome of Jordan’s multiyear development deal with 20th Television, which also includes adaptations of his novels Redemption and Deception.
Alongside Jordan, the series will be helmed by acclaimed writer David Shore, known for his work on The Good Doctor and House. This marks Shore’s first project under his overall deal with 20th Television, and executives were particularly enthusiastic about his return to the legal genre, given his background as a practicing attorney. Although development had been ongoing, the series order accelerated significantly after Shore submitted the pilot script. Instead of merely responding with notes, Shore surprised Hulu executives by delivering a complete draft of the second episode as well.
Elisabeth Moss Takes Center Stage
The legal drama Conviction will feature Elisabeth Moss in the lead role of Neve Harper, a confident criminal defense attorney who takes on a high-profile case involving a husband accused of killing his wife by setting their home ablaze. Moss will also serve as an executive producer for the series, collaborating with Shore, Warren Littlefield, and Bert Salke.
This project marks a continuation of Moss’s successful partnership with Hulu, following her acclaimed performances in the Emmy-winning dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale and its upcoming sequel, The Testaments. The sequel is set to premiere on April 8, 2026, and takes place 15 years after the original series, focusing on the lives of young women within Gilead’s oppressive regime.
Filming for Conviction is expected to commence in June 2024 in New York, with a writer’s room anticipated to open within the next ten days. Although a specific release date for the legal drama has not yet been announced, the project is expected to generate significant interest given Moss’s star power and the compelling narrative crafted by Shore.
Future of The Handmaid’s Tale Franchise
As The Testaments gears up for its launch, Moss continues to be a pivotal figure in the franchise. The sequel will explore the character of Agnes, played by Chase Infiniti, who is the abducted daughter of Moss’s character, June. The series will delve into Agnes’s struggles with her identity amid Gilead’s brutal environment, providing a new perspective on the world established in The Handmaid’s Tale.
With the combination of Moss’s talent and Shore’s storytelling expertise, Conviction is poised to be a noteworthy addition to Hulu’s programming, further showcasing the platform’s commitment to high-quality, character-driven content. As production begins, fans of both Moss and legal dramas will be eager to see how this new narrative unfolds.
