Eagles Weigh Trade Options for Quarterback Tanner McKee
The Philadelphia Eagles face a significant decision regarding the future of quarterback Tanner McKee, particularly as the NFL Scouting Combine approaches. During a recent media session, Howie Roseman, the team’s executive vice president of football operations, and head coach Nick Sirianni discussed various offseason strategies, including potential trades. While discussions primarily revolved around wide receiver A.J. Brown, questions about McKee’s status have emerged, especially given the increasing demand for starting-caliber quarterbacks.
When asked about the possibility of trading McKee, Roseman was noticeably reserved. He acknowledged McKee’s position as a valuable backup quarterback, stating, “It’s an important position in this league, in sports. And I have a lot of confidence in the player.” Unlike his more detailed comments regarding Brown, Roseman’s response to inquiries about McKee was concise and non-committal. He emphasized the team’s positive view of McKee but refrained from elaborating on any potential market interest for the young quarterback.
McKee’s performance since being drafted in the sixth round from Stanford has attracted attention. His debut in Week 17 of the 2024 season showcased his potential, as he completed 3 of 4 passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Following that, he threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns in the season finale against the New York Giants. Although his most recent outing saw a decline in performance due to a challenging offensive line and a lack of starters, he has demonstrated a strong and accurate arm during his two seasons with the team.
As the offseason progresses, the Eagles face a dilemma. With only Jalen Hurts and McKee under contract, trading McKee could leave Philadelphia without a reliable backup. This would necessitate additional spending in free agency to secure a veteran backup for Hurts ahead of the 2026 season. Roseman must weigh the potential benefits of a trade against the risks of losing a quarterback with promising skills.
To gauge McKee’s market value, it is essential to consider the broader landscape of NFL teams that are uncertain about their starting quarterbacks. Teams such as the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Las Vegas Raiders, and Cleveland Browns are among those facing questions about their quarterback situations. While some teams appear to have their future quarterbacks in mind, others may look to McKee as a viable option, especially given the scarcity of available talent in both free agency and the draft.
The free-agent quarterback class includes notable names like Kirk Cousins, Aaron Rodgers, and Daniel Jones. However, many of these players come with uncertainties regarding their performance and longevity. With teams like the Colts reportedly open to trading their current backup, Anthony Richardson, and the Dolphins suggesting all options are on the table for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the competition for starting positions is fierce.
Given the limited pool of proven quarterbacks and the uncertainty surrounding the draft class, which is largely perceived as lacking in ready-to-start prospects, McKee may emerge as an appealing option for teams seeking a reliable backup or future starter. This demand could compel Roseman to reconsider his approach.
The upcoming weeks leading to the draft will be pivotal for the Eagles as they evaluate their position. Will Roseman decide to capitalize on McKee’s growing market value, or will he choose to maintain depth at the quarterback position? The answers to these questions will shape the Eagles’ strategy heading into the 2026 season.
