Surge in Ski Injuries Among Kids: 30+ Cases Treated This Month

UPDATE: A startling rise in ski and snowboard injuries among children has been confirmed by local pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ahmed Bazzi, who reports treating over 30 young patients for slope-related injuries this month alone. This alarming trend comes as March brings some of Michigan’s harshest winter conditions, turning icy slopes into major hazards for young skiers and snowboarders.

Thirteen-year-old Gabriel Cline is one of the unfortunate cases. Instead of enjoying school or playing with friends, he’s recovering from a severe skiing accident that shattered both bones in his right leg. “I gained too much speed, hit a bump, crashed, and twisted my leg,” Gabriel recounted, highlighting the dangers of challenging slopes.

Dr. Bazzi, affiliated with Michigan Orthopaedic Surgeons, revealed the extent of Gabriel’s injuries. “His tibia broke in half in a spiral fashion,” he said, emphasizing the seriousness of the condition that required surgical intervention to insert a steel rod for stabilization. Fortunately, Gabriel’s recovery has been remarkable, stating, “I learned how to walk again this week.”

However, Gabriel’s incident is part of a troubling pattern. Dr. Bazzi has noted a significant uptick in ski and snowboard-related injuries this season, attributing it to a combination of riskier behavior among young athletes, inadequate training, poorly fitted equipment, and increasingly treacherous slope conditions. “With icy, compacted snow, skiers are facing harder landings,” he explained.

Specific injuries reported this season include shoulder injuries, elbow fractures, femur fractures, knee ligament tears, and growth plate injuries—conditions that could sideline young athletes for weeks or even impact their long-term growth and development.

As the ski season continues, Dr. Bazzi urges parents and young skiers to prioritize safety. “Proper instruction, fitted gear, checking bindings, learning how to fall, and stretching before and after skiing are critical,” he stressed. Gabriel, hoping to prevent similar accidents for his younger siblings, advises, “I learned not to pressure myself into going down hills too advanced for me.”

Parents planning a trip to the slopes should take heed: ensuring the right gear and preparing adequately can make all the difference. With the continued risks posed by this winter’s conditions, awareness and caution are paramount.

This urgent news highlights the increasing injuries among young skiers and snowboarders in Metro Detroit, urging immediate attention to safety measures as the ski season progresses.
