Steak ‘n Shake Launches Bitcoin Bonuses for Employees in March
In a significant move for its workforce, fast food chain Steak ‘n Shake, owned by Biglari Holdings, announced on March 4, 2024, that it will begin offering Bitcoin bonuses to all hourly employees. Starting in March, the company will pay employees a bonus of 21 cents worth of Bitcoin for every hour worked, reflecting a growing trend of integrating cryptocurrency into employee compensation.
The announcement was made through a post on X, where the popular burger chain expressed its commitment to becoming a “Maximum-Wage Employer” in the communities it serves. The company aims to attract and retain top talent by providing competitive compensation that includes digital currency bonuses. In addition to the Bitcoin initiative, Steak ‘n Shake has pledged to contribute $1,000 to the Trump Accounts initiative for eligible employees’ children, further enhancing its employee welfare programs.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average work week for private nonfarm employees in the United States is approximately 34.3 hours. If all hourly employees at Steak ‘n Shake maintain this average, they could earn around $28 in Bitcoin bonuses each month. This innovative compensation strategy is part of the company’s broader effort to integrate cryptocurrency into its operations effectively.
Steak ‘n Shake’s Strategy with Cryptocurrency
Steak ‘n Shake has been actively exploring the potential of Bitcoin within its business model. Recent reports show that the chain has experienced a notable increase in same-store sales since introducing Bitcoin payment options. The company has created a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, which is funded by sales made in Bitcoin and is intended to support employee bonuses. This initiative underscores Steak ‘n Shake’s commitment to not only leverage the benefits of digital currencies but also to enhance the financial well-being of its workforce.
At the time of this announcement, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $68,136.56, reflecting a 2.45% increase over the previous 24 hours, according to data from Benzinga Pro. In contrast, shares of Biglari Holdings closed at $336.40, down 13.25% on that day, yet the stock has shown a year-to-date gain of 1.19%. Benzinga’s Edge Stock Rankings highlight that while the stock has a strong momentum rating, its short-term performance has been less favorable.
Steak ‘n Shake’s decision to incorporate Bitcoin bonuses represents a forward-thinking approach to employee compensation. By embracing cryptocurrency, the company aims to position itself at the forefront of modern employment practices, potentially setting a precedent for other businesses in the fast-food sector and beyond.
