Salisbury Hornets Rally for Dramatic 3-2 Victory Over Ledford

In an exhilarating match on March 5, 2024, the Salisbury Hornets girls soccer team staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Ledford 3-2. The Hornets trailed 2-0 just seven minutes into the game, but their resilience shone through as they rallied to secure their third consecutive win of the season.

Turning the Tide

Head coach Matt Parrish described the initial setback as a “legitimate reality check” for his team. “Down 2-0 just seven minutes into the match, it was a gut-punch moment,” he stated. However, the Hornets gradually found their rhythm.

The turning point came with just ten minutes left in the first half. Anna Kate Goodman intercepted a ball in midfield, skillfully maneuvered past defenders, and delivered a precise diagonal shot that found the back of the net. This goal energized the team and shifted momentum, according to Parrish. “It was a goal that told our girls they belonged,” he noted.

After halftime, Ledford attempted to maintain their lead, but the Hornets struck again. Maddie Crabb created space and fed the ball to Goodman, who scored again, leveling the match 2-2 with 22 minutes remaining.

Last-Minute Heroics

As the game approached its conclusion, Salisbury displayed greater urgency and determination. Freshman super-sub Macy Jones proved pivotal, heading in a game-winning throw-in from Goodman with less than seven minutes on the clock. This marked the second time in three games that Jones scored shortly after entering the field, a testament to her impact on the squad. Parrish remarked, “This time she was perfectly placed following some in-game adjustments we made on Monday.”

The Hornets showcased strong performances from several players, including Gabbi Fatovic, who ran an impressive five to six miles during the match, as well as Lola Koontz, Elsie Hinson, Meredith Williams, Emmaline Meyers, and Jamilet Figueroa. “I don’t have enough superlatives to express my appreciation for the individual players, the team, or the effort tonight,” Parrish expressed proudly.

Salisbury’s next challenge will be against Southwestern Randolph on March 7, 2024, at 18:00 in Ludwig Stadium.

In another match, South Rowan secured a dominant 9-0 victory over Thomasville. Freshman Anabelle Chavis led the Raiders with a remarkable three goals, while teammates Cailynn Withers, Sophie Steedley, Adeline Rodgers, Brooke Oehler, and Breanna Clem each contributed to the scoreline.

Meanwhile, East Rowan faced a setback, losing 2-1 to Central Davidson. Lucy Stanly scored the lone goal for East, while goalkeeper Addie Lambert made an impressive 20 saves.
