A special charity concert titled “Rainy Day” will take place tonight, organized by Samantha Fortney, a senior at Hawaii Preparatory Academy. The event aims to raise funds to purchase essential items for guests of The Salvation Army’s Hilo Overnight Safe Space, a shelter that opened in 2024 to assist individuals experiencing homelessness.

The Hilo Overnight Safe Space offers 50 beds each night, alongside hot meals and support from on-site case managers. After visiting the local Salvation Army Hilo Corps, Fortney felt compelled to take action. She was struck by the dedicated care provided to vulnerable community members, particularly the elderly and those facing difficult living conditions.

“I wanted my capstone project to respond to a real need right here,” Fortney stated in a press release. “I met with shelter staff to ask what items were most urgently requested. Learning that many individuals walk around town barefoot and frequently endure heavy rains, I focused my fundraiser on providing slippers and umbrellas.”

To ensure the concert’s success, Fortney collaborated with local musicians. The renowned guitarist Farzad Azard, known for his unique fusion of flamenco, jazz, and global musical styles, agreed to perform free of charge. He will be joined by fellow guitarist Yoshua DiCaprio, creating an engaging musical experience for attendees.

All proceeds from the concert will directly benefit the Hilo shelter, providing warmth and essential care to some of the most vulnerable residents of Hawaii Island. Tickets for the event are priced at $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Children aged 12 and under can attend for free. The concert will begin at 6 p.m. at the Blue Dragon Tavern, located at 61-3616 Kawaihae Road, Waimea. Doors will open at 5 p.m.

Attendees can purchase tickets online at bluedragontavern.com, supporting a local initiative that directly impacts the community. Fortney’s efforts exemplify the spirit of giving and highlight the need for compassionate action in response to local challenges.
