Colorado Buffaloes Women’s Basketball Boosts NCAA Tournament Hopes

The Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball team has significantly enhanced its chances of qualifying for the NCAA Tournament after a strong performance at the Big 12 Conference tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. Despite suffering a narrow defeat to West Virginia in the semifinals, the Buffaloes left the tournament with renewed optimism about their postseason prospects.

Under the guidance of head coach JR Payne, the Buffaloes concluded the Big 12 tournament with a record of 2-1. They secured victories over Kansas, a fellow contender for a tournament spot, and achieved a noteworthy win against No. 3 seed and 20th-ranked Baylor. Their semifinal match against second-seeded West Virginia ended in a heart-wrenching 48-47 loss, but the overall performance has led to a more favorable outlook in NCAA projections.

According to ESPN bracketologist Charlie Creme, the Buffaloes, now standing at 22-11 for the season, are projected to be one of the last four teams to receive a bye in the NCAA Tournament. This marks a significant improvement from their position just a week prior. “Oh yeah, of course,” said Payne when asked if she felt better about her team’s chances. “I mean, I don’t think there’s any question that we have earned the right to dance, so to speak.”

The Buffaloes finished the regular season with an 11-7 record in Big 12 play and have won 10 of their last 14 games. They have also achieved the notable feat of defeating four teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 this season, including their recent victory over Baylor.

Coach Mark Kellogg of West Virginia praised the Buffaloes after their semifinal clash, stating, “That team is deserving. JR is one of the best coaches in the country. She does a phenomenal job. She’s been in that situation before.” Kellogg expressed hope that the Buffaloes would see their name called when the tournament selections are announced.

The Big 12 Conference has seen several of its teams solidify their NCAA Tournament bids, with Creme noting that seven teams from the conference are projected to be firmly in the tournament. Arizona State has also emerged as a contender among the last four teams in. Meanwhile, BYU and Utah are listed as the first two teams out, and Kansas State, despite an 18-17 record, has made a case for itself following a strong run to the conference semifinals.

Coaches from across the conference have highlighted the level of competition within the league this season. Kellogg emphasized the improved non-conference performance compared to previous years, suggesting that the Big 12 deserves to send more teams to the NCAA Tournament than what current projections indicate.

Colorado’s representation in the Big 12 is further emphasized by the presence of seven players who hail from the state. Notable among them is Jana Van Gytenbeek, a graduate of Cherry Creek High School and the starting point guard at Baylor. Although injured, Marya Hudgins, a key player for BYU, expressed her pride in representing Colorado in the league. “It’s so awesome,” she remarked about the strong Colorado presence in the Big 12. “There’s so many girls who look up to us.”
