Howard University Trio Dominates MEAC Women’s Basketball Awards

In an impressive display of talent, Howard University’s women’s basketball players swept the weekly honors from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), as announced on March 4, 2024. Guard Zoe Stewart earned the title of Player of the Week, while her teammates Ariella Henigan and Nile Miller were recognized as Rookie of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. This recognition comes after the Bison secured the regular-season championship with a decisive victory over Norfolk State.

Stewart, a redshirt junior from Terre Haute, Indiana, delivered a standout performance, scoring 19 points and contributing three rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the game against Norfolk State. Her efforts were crucial in driving the Bison to a 74-59 win, cementing their position at the top of the conference standings.

Henigan, a freshman hailing from Chicago, Illinois, also shone brightly during the match. She scored 14 points and recorded three rebounds, one assist, and a block. Notably, Henigan demonstrated exceptional precision at the free-throw line, going 10-for-10 in her attempts.

Miller, a senior from Woodbury, New Jersey, showcased her versatility by achieving a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. In addition to her scoring, Miller also contributed four steals, further solidifying her reputation as a defensive asset for the Bison.

Other Notable Performers in the Conference

The MEAC saw several other players deliver noteworthy performances over the week. Tierney Coleman from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) contributed seven points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the Eagles’ commanding 67-41 win against South Carolina State.

At Norfolk State, Jasha Clinton scored 19 points and added five rebounds and four steals in a competitive match against Howard. Meanwhile, Jermesha Frierson from Delaware State University (DSU) tallied eight points, five assists, and five steals in a tough outing against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Other key performances included Mihjae Hayes from Morgan State University, who finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists in a 64-54 victory over Coppin State. Kailyn Nash also made headlines with a game-high 15 points, along with seven rebounds, three blocks, and two steals in Morgan State’s triumph over Coppin State.

As the season progresses, the attention will shift towards the upcoming tournament, where these athletes will seek to continue their strong performances and lead their teams to success.
