Philadelphia Parks Launch Free Earth Month Events Starting April 1

URGENT UPDATE: Philadelphia is gearing up for an exciting lineup of free outdoor events this April as part of Earth Month, hosted by the Fairmount Park Conservancy. Residents are encouraged to participate in activities designed to celebrate and explore the city’s vibrant green spaces, starting with the first event on April 1!

The festivities kick off with the Trolley Trail Run Club, a 4.5-mile run through West Fairmount Park. Runners of all speeds can join the trail run, which follows the historic Trolley Trail and includes multiple pace groups. This event is an excellent opportunity for fitness enthusiasts to enjoy nature while staying active.

On April 11, bird watchers can join a guided bird walk during the Second Saturday Hike in East Fairmount Park. Led by experienced birding instructor Troy Bynum, participants will explore the Fair Amount Food Forest, spotting local birds and discovering the area’s natural beauty.

Families can enjoy a day on the water with free community paddle boating at FDR Park on April 18. Visitors can pedal across Edgewood Lake, keeping an eye out for wildlife, including turtles and ducks, making this a perfect outing for nature lovers.

Later in the month, ¡Bailar en FDR! returns on April 24, featuring a salsa class and social dance at Gateway Plaza in FDR Park. Open to dancers of all experience levels, the event will showcase music from DJ Valentin of Dance Philly, with delicious offerings from Taqueria Morales available for purchase.

Additionally, several volunteer workdays will occur throughout the month, offering residents a chance to give back to the parks. Scheduled efforts include planting and cleanup at Lemon Hill on April 11, Cobbs Creek Park on April 14, and the Belmont Wetlands on April 15. A special volunteer project on April 22 at Belmont Plateau will honor the site of one of the first Earth Day celebrations in 1970, where approximately 30,000 people gathered.
