Former Lewiston Police Chief Nominated as Maine’s U.S. Marshal
BREAKING: Former Lewiston Police Chief David St. Pierre has been nominated to serve as Maine’s next U.S. Marshal, as confirmed by U.S. Senator Susan Collins in a press release. This significant development highlights St. Pierre’s leadership during the devastating mass shooting in October 2023.
Senator Collins praised St. Pierre’s extensive career and his “steady leadership” during one of Maine’s darkest hours, emphasizing his commitment to public safety. “His professionalism and composure during the tragic events showcased his deep dedication to serving the community,” Collins stated.
St. Pierre, who retired just last month, is now awaiting Senate confirmation to officially take on the new role. He will replace Kevin Neal, who held the position since 2022 before transitioning to a similar role in Massachusetts.
As U.S. Marshal, St. Pierre will oversee a range of critical responsibilities, including apprehending fugitives, managing federal prisoners, and operating the Witness Protection Program. His appointment carries significant implications for law enforcement across the state.
St. Pierre’s law enforcement journey began over 30 years ago, starting as a patrol officer in 1992. He climbed the ranks to become chief in 2021, gaining vast experience in investigations and interagency coordination. His leadership was particularly prominent during the aftermath of the mass shooting in 2023, where he coordinated local, state, and federal responses to what is noted as the deadliest shooting in Maine’s history.
“Chief St. Pierre played a central role in guiding the response efforts,” the press release noted, highlighting his critical contributions during the crisis.
St. Pierre’s recent achievements include overseeing the transition to Lewiston’s new public safety facility, which integrates multiple law enforcement agencies. His educational background includes graduating from the FBI National Academy in 2018, and he remains actively involved in law enforcement associations.
Expressing pride in St. Pierre’s nomination, Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline stated, “We definitely miss him, but I couldn’t be happier for him.” His departure marks a significant moment for the city as they see their former chief step into a crucial federal role.
As St. Pierre awaits confirmation, the law enforcement community and citizens across Maine are eager to see the impact of his leadership in this new capacity. Keep an eye on developments as this story unfolds and St. Pierre prepares to take on his new duties.
