Willow Creek Church Marks 50 Years Amid Leadership Scandal

Willow Creek Community Church in Chicago, a significant evangelical institution, recently marked its 50th anniversary amid the shadow of past controversies surrounding its founding pastor, Bill Hybels. Once celebrated for its dynamic leadership and community engagement, the church’s reputation was severely impacted by allegations of sexual misconduct against Hybels that surfaced in 2018.

Leadership and Allegations

Founded in 1975, Willow Creek rapidly grew to attract thousands of attendees, with weekend services drawing close to 15,000 by the early 1990s. Hybels, who led the church for over 40 years, was regarded as a charismatic figure who inspired many, including students from the University of Illinois. His leadership style and teachings at various conferences earned him a dedicated following.

However, the church faced a major upheaval when the Chicago Tribune published a detailed report on March 23, 2018, citing allegations from multiple women, including former colleagues, accusing Hybels of inappropriate behavior. Despite his denials, the church’s leadership later acknowledged the credibility of these claims, revealing a pattern of misconduct involving unwanted physical contact and inappropriate invitations.

In the wake of the allegations, Hybels announced his immediate retirement during a congregational meeting on April 10, 2018. His departure was followed by the resignation of nearly all senior leaders at Willow Creek, including the entire church board and his successors, Heather Larson and Steve Carter.

Reflections on Accountability and Change

Since Hybels’ exit, the church has undergone significant changes and continues under new leadership. Yet, attendance has dwindled to less than half of the peak of 25,000 weekly attendees. Over the past seven years, hundreds of staff members have resigned, further indicating the ongoing impact of the scandal.

As Willow Creek celebrated its milestone anniversary, questions arose about how Hybels’ legacy was addressed.
