Antifa-Linked Site Closes Amid Trump Administration’s Crackdown

A prominent anti-fascist website, It’s Going Down (IGD), has ceased operations, citing the challenging environment created by the Trump administration’s intensified focus on leftist movements. The announcement, made on Saturday, highlights the group’s concerns over increased risks and legal pressures as it has been unable to continue its activities under the current political climate.

IGD, known for its anonymous contributions and coverage of actions linked to anti-fascist activities, expressed that conditions have deteriorated significantly. The site stated, “As events in the United States have continued to escalate and conditions have grown more dire, it’s clear that IGD does not have the capacity to meet the moment as a hub for grassroots reporting and journalism.” The group emphasized the need for others to develop alternative media platforms in light of its closure.

The announcement follows a series of actions by the Trump administration, which officially labeled the Antifa movement as a domestic terrorist organization in an executive order dated September 22, 2020. This directive instructed law enforcement to prioritize investigations and potential charges against those involved in organized political violence. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has since taken steps to address incidents tied to the group, including filing terrorism charges related to a shooting incident at a Texas ICE facility attributed to a suspected Antifa cell.

The DOJ previously mentioned IGD in a criminal complaint involving two individuals, Ellen Brennan Reiche and Samantha Frances Brooks, who were convicted in 2021 for attempting to sabotage a train track in Washington State. This act, which involved placing a shunt device on the track, posed a significant danger by potentially causing a train derailment.

In its recent statement, IGD criticized the administration for what it describes as an attempt to consolidate authoritarian power. “We should all have a sober and clear-eyed view of what is happening,” the site asserted, adding that “conditions are worsening” for those who oppose the current political landscape.

The website previously published content that celebrated various illegal actions. For instance, it reported on incidents like the flooding of an ICE lawyer’s office in Portland in 2019 and a protest that escalated to violence during the construction of a police training facility in Atlanta in 2022.

Since at least 2022, IGD’s account on X, formerly known as Twitter, has been suspended. The platform, along with others, has been used by activists to announce events or strategize against perceived political opponents. Some users within these circles have expressed concerns that increasing violence could alienate public opinion against their movement.

As the political landscape continues to shift, with calls for accountability and legal repercussions for actions associated with leftist groups, the closure of IGD serves as a notable development in the ongoing discourse surrounding political activism and law enforcement’s response to it.
