Congressional Probe Launched into 170+ Detained U.S. Citizens
UPDATE: A joint Congressional investigation has been launched into the alarming detention of over 170 U.S. citizens by immigration officials, following shocking revelations from a ProPublica report. Democrats from both the House and Senate announced the urgent probe today, aiming to address serious allegations of misconduct and racial profiling by immigration agents.
During a press conference in Los Angeles, Rep. Robert Garcia emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Over 170 U.S. citizens are being arrested. Why? Because they look like me,” highlighting concerns over racial profiling against Latinos. This investigation will include a hearing in Los Angeles, where officials demand all records regarding the treatment of U.S. citizens by immigration agents.
Investigations have confirmed that nearly 50 citizens were detained solely based on questions about their citizenship as of October 5, 2023. Most of these individuals are Latino, with approximately 130 others detained during raids or protests, facing allegations that often lack substantial evidence. Reports indicate that some citizens have been subjected to excessive force, including being dragged, tackled, or even shot.
Mayor Karen Bass expressed her deep concern, stating, “What is happening to undocumented residents is also happening to U.S. citizens, which means this can happen to anyone.” The investigation arises amidst increasing scrutiny over the treatment of both immigrants and citizens, with calls for transparency on federal enforcement actions.
Garcia and Senator Richard Blumenthal have sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), urging them to address the disproportionate impact of immigration enforcement in cities like Los Angeles. They noted, “The impact of these arrests has not been evenly distributed across the country,” signaling a troubling trend of racial profiling.
DHS has responded to these allegations, with spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin rejecting claims of racial targeting, asserting that immigration laws are enforced without prejudice. She stated, “Claims by the media, agitators, and sanctuary politicians… are FALSE.” The White House has also dismissed the concerns, attributing recent tensions to “unhinged rhetoric from activists.”
The urgency of this investigation is underscored by the distressing reality that at least two dozen citizens report being held for over a day without access to legal counsel or communication. As the investigation unfolds, the implications for immigration policy and community safety are profound.
As this story develops, observers are keenly watching for further actions from Congress and the DHS. With the increasing visibility of these detentions, the national conversation around immigration enforcement and civil liberties is poised to intensify.
Stay tuned for more updates as this urgent situation continues to evolve.
