Former St. Petersburg Mayor David J. Fischer Dies at 92
David J. Fischer, who served as the mayor of St. Petersburg for three terms from 1991 to 2001, has passed away at the age of 92. His daughter, Susan Fischer McGarry, announced his death on social media, stating that her “wonderful dad passed away peacefully,” as reported by WLFA.
Fischer’s tenure as mayor was marked by a commitment to revitalizing the city and addressing significant challenges, including civil unrest. His legacy includes a focus on downtown redevelopment and cultural investment, alongside a notable environmental initiative that saw the planting of over 18,000 trees. During his leadership, he navigated the aftermath of a change in government structure approved by voters in 1993, which served as a catalyst for strong municipal leadership.
Legacy of Leadership and Community Engagement
According to a statement from the St. Petersburg Museum of History, Fischer collaborated with federal agencies and then-President Bill Clinton to secure resources for economic development and community initiatives. His efforts helped to foster growth and prosperity within the city, underscoring his commitment to public service.
Fischer’s time in office faced significant challenges, notably the civil unrest in 1996 following the shooting of TyRon Lewis, a Black motorist, by a white police officer. In response to the violence, which included looting and arson, Fischer declared a state of emergency and mobilized over 300 officers along with the National Guard to restore order. Following this turmoil, he implemented initiatives aimed at rebuilding trust within the community through police partnerships and economic revitalization programs.
Current Mayor Ken Welch paid tribute to Fischer, recognizing him as a dedicated public servant who left a lasting impact on St. Petersburg. Welch praised Fischer for leading “with vision, humility, and a deep love for this community.” This sentiment resonated across social media, as many community members expressed their sorrow and acknowledged the former mayor’s belief in the importance of steady progress.
Contributions to Sports and Philanthropy
Fischer’s administration also witnessed the inaugural season of Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Devil Rays, now known as the Tampa Bay Rays, fulfilling a long-held dream for local sports enthusiasts. His commitment to philanthropy was evident in his support for various organizations focused on education, minorities, children, the arts, and animal welfare.
In a statement reported by WTSP, his daughter reiterated his dedication to civic leadership, stating that he was an “extraordinary civic leader who will be greatly missed.” Fischer’s passing signifies the end of an influential era for St. Petersburg, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
