Designers Reveal Two Essential Lighting Changes for Fall
As the end of Daylight Saving Time approaches, many households experience shorter days and dimmer evenings. This seasonal shift often brings a sense of gloom, prompting homeowners to seek ways to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Interior designers have identified two essential changes in lighting that can significantly enhance the comfort and ambiance of homes during this transitional period.
Layering Low-Level Lighting for Warmth
Effective lighting design focuses on creating both comfort and practicality. According to Caroline Milns, head of interior design at Zulufish, layered lighting becomes crucial as daylight fades. She emphasizes the importance of planning a variety of light sources from the start of a project. Combining lamps, wall lights, and picture lights allows homeowners to create warmth and rhythm in their spaces.
Designer Lauren Gilberthorpe recommends introducing more low-level lighting as evenings grow longer. “Table and wall lamps, along with picture lights, create a cocooning atmosphere that overhead lighting alone cannot achieve,” she explains. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic but also adds functionality to rooms where families spend more time during the fall.
Additionally, Christina Cruz of Christina Cruz Interiors suggests opting for more substantial lighting fixtures. “I swap my lightweight task lamps for heavier bases and larger shades during the fall,” she says. This creates a warmer glow, making table lamps a primary source of light in winter months. Similarly, Jeanne Barber, founder of Camden Grace Interiors, highlights the value of portable lamps for creating cozy environments in areas without convenient outlets.
As daylight diminishes earlier each day, designer Kathy Kuo advises adding extra lamps in frequently used rooms. “Your cozy family room or restful bedroom can never have too many lamps,” she asserts.
Adjusting Bulb Temperature for Comfort
In addition to increasing the number of light sources, designers recommend adjusting the temperature of bulbs to enhance the overall atmosphere. Kailee Blalock from House of Hive Design Co. notes the importance of leaning into warm lamp light as daylight wanes. She suggests using bulbs closer to 2700K and implementing smart technology to ensure that homes feel illuminated upon arrival.
Interior designer Lucy Harris highlights the benefit of programming lamps to turn on automatically before sunset. “In the fall, I set my lamps to come on about half an hour before dusk,” she states. This simple adjustment can transform a room from dark and unwelcoming to warm and inviting.
Furthermore, Lauren Gilberthorpe recommends using warmer bulb tones to soften rooms and complement natural materials. This change can create an intimate feel in homes, making them reflective of the season.
For those looking to maximize existing light, Allison Lind of Allison Lind Interiors suggests incorporating mirrors into lighting schemes. “Mirrors bounce light, enhancing both natural illumination and the glow from ambient lighting,” she explains.
These strategic adjustments to lighting not only combat the seasonal blues but also enhance the overall aesthetic of homes during the fall and winter months. By implementing these two important shifts, homeowners can create a space that feels both cozy and welcoming, ensuring that their environment reflects the warmth and comfort of the season.
