UPDATE: The suspect identified in the tragic shooting death of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nuñez is Angelo Jose Saldivar, 47, following a high-speed motorcycle chase that unfolded just hours ago. Flags are currently at half-staff across California to honor the fallen officer.

Deputy Nuñez, 28, was shot while responding to a domestic violence call on October 2, 2023, at approximately 12:37 p.m. in Rancho Cucamonga. As deputies arrived at a condominium complex on Hollyhock Drive, Saldivar allegedly opened fire, fatally wounding Nuñez with a single gunshot to the head. He was rushed to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center but was pronounced dead at 1:13 p.m.

Authorities confirmed Saldivar is not affiliated with any law enforcement agency and remains hospitalized after crashing his motorcycle during a chaotic escape. Following the shooting, he fled on a motorcycle, leading to a dramatic pursuit that ended on the 210 Freeway near Upland, where he crashed after being struck by an off-duty officer. Saldivar will face murder charges once he is medically cleared, according to the sheriff’s department.

Outside the sheriff’s station in Rancho Cucamonga, a makeshift memorial has emerged, with mourners leaving candles, flowers, and heartfelt messages for Nuñez. His neighbors expressed their disbelief and sorrow, sharing memories of a man who was deeply committed to his community. “He is just trying to do his job and he died,” said neighbor Lanie, reflecting the sentiments of many grieving for the fallen deputy.

Sheriff Shannon Dicus described Nuñez as a “wonderful father” and dedicated officer, survived by his pregnant wife, Roxy, and a two-year-old daughter. “His courage, compassion, and dedication reflect the finest traditions of law enforcement,” said Governor Gavin Newsom, who extended condolences on behalf of all Californians.

In a show of solidarity, over 100 law enforcement officers participated in a procession to honor Nuñez as his body was transported to the coroner’s office. Meanwhile, the sheriff’s department is seeking donations through the Peace Officers Research Association of California to support Nuñez’s family during this difficult time.

As the investigation unfolds, the community remains on edge, grappling with the loss of a dedicated officer who gave his life in service to others. Local authorities are expected to provide further updates on Saldivar’s charges and the ongoing investigation.
