Urgent Update: Tom Aspinall’s Vision Deteriorates After UFC 321
UPDATE: UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall faces a serious health crisis following a devastating eye poke during his title fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 on Saturday, October 21, 2023. Reports confirm that Aspinall, aged 32, is struggling with his vision, with his father and coach, Andy Aspinall, revealing alarming details about his condition.
During the first round of the fight, Gane accidentally poked both of Aspinall’s eyes, leading to an unprecedented ruling of no contest—the first in UFC title fight history. Hospitalized immediately after the incident, Aspinall has now been assessed to have severe vision impairment.
In a video update shared on Aspinall’s YouTube channel, Andy stated, “It’s not good. His right eye, he can’t see anything. It’s just gray. [Doctors] tested him on words, and he just couldn’t see anything. His left eye is 50 percent. It went about four letters down the chart and then he couldn’t see letters.” This troubling news has raised significant concerns among fans and commentators alike.
While Andy confirmed that Aspinall avoided “bone damage,” the family is awaiting further tests to determine the long-term impact of the eye poke. Aspinall, visibly distraught in the Octagon, has not issued an official statement since the fight.
The UFC is reportedly planning to rebook the bout between Aspinall and Gane, according to UFC CEO Dana White. However, the timeline for this rematch remains uncertain as Aspinall’s team closely monitors his recovery. Andy expressed cautious optimism, stating, “Hopefully it will be alright. But it might not be.”
As the situation develops, fans and fellow fighters are rallying around Aspinall, hoping for a swift and full recovery. The community is eager for updates on his condition as the heavyweight division braces for the potential implications of this incident.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story, as the future of Tom Aspinall and the heavyweight title picture hangs in the balance.
