Huda Mustafa Apologizes for Racial Slur Incident with Olandria Carthen
UPDATE: Former “Love Island USA” contestant Huda Mustafa, 25, issues a public apology following a viral incident involving a racial slur directed at her co-star Olandria Carthen, 27. The controversy erupted during a livestream on July 15, 2023, when a caller used the N-word to refer to Carthen, prompting an immediate response from Mustafa and her boyfriend, reality star Louis Russell, 24.
During the livestream, after the offensive remark, the couple was visibly shocked. Russell expressed his disappointment, saying, “Hey,” while Mustafa questioned, “Yo, what the f–k? What did they say?” The incident quickly gained traction online, leading to widespread backlash.
In response, Mustafa took to her Instagram Story to clarify that she and Russell “did not hear it very well” but acknowledged their decision to hang up immediately after realizing the gravity of the situation. She characterized their laughter as a reaction to an “awkward and inappropriate” moment, insisting that the caller was at fault.
Russell also addressed the controversy on Instagram, describing his reaction as “flustered” and highlighting the “harmful and dangerous” nature of the caller’s behavior. He emphasized their commitment to advocating for under-represented communities, especially in the realm of television.
Carthen responded to the incident, urging her followers to understand that such language is “never acceptable.” She called for “real accountability and awareness” and encouraged those involved to support anti-racism efforts by donating to relevant organizations.
Following the outcry, Mustafa returned to Instagram the next day, stating she had spent time reflecting on the incident. She acknowledged the “gravity” of the racial slur and apologized directly to Carthen for her reaction, clarifying that her initial response stemmed from being caught off guard rather than finding humor in the situation. Mustafa described her reaction as “nervous” and “uncomfortable,” but ultimately recognized it as inappropriate.
In a commitment to take action, Mustafa announced her intention to make a personal donation to the NAACP, reinforcing her dedication to addressing racial issues.
This developing story highlights the importance of accountability in the public eye, as both Mustafa and Russell navigate the fallout from the incident. Their responses underscore a significant moment in the ongoing conversation about race and representation in media.
