During a recent episode of HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher expressed his support for a missile defense program, specifically referencing the proposed Golden Dome program. This endorsement comes despite his reservations about the cost and timeline associated with the initiative, as outlined by former President Donald Trump.

In the online “Overtime” segment aired on March 15, 2024, Maher articulated his belief in the necessity of a missile defense system. He stated, “I have a problem if we don’t [implement a missile defense program].” This commentary aligns with concerns voiced by Representative Jared Moskowitz, who highlighted the potential threats posed by advancements in Chinese technology.

Moskowitz remarked, “I don’t have a problem if we do a missile defense program. China is — their technology, they’re putting it in space.” He emphasized the need for the United States to match those advancements to ensure national security. Maher reinforced this sentiment, adding, “Just because Trump thought of it, I’m not against it. Something that would stop the increasing number of rogue missiles from maybe coming over here and incinerating me, yeah, mark me down as a pro for that.”

While Maher supports the concept of missile defense, he expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility and budgetary implications of the program. He referenced Trump’s claim that it would take $180 billion and three years to implement, stating, “That’s bullshit; it’s going to take — whatever it is, of course, everything is overscheduled and doesn’t ever end on time or on budget.”

The discussion around missile defense comes at a time of heightened concern regarding international security threats, particularly from nations like China. The implementation of such programs raises complex questions about funding and technology, making it a contentious topic in political discourse.

As the debate continues, Maher’s remarks reflect a broader conversation about national defense and the potential role of technology in safeguarding the United States. The challenges of balancing innovative defense strategies with fiscal responsibility remain at the forefront of this ongoing discussion.
