Actress Elle Fanning, known for her roles in the new films Predator: Badlands and Sentimental Value, has expressed her belief that genre films deserve the same recognition as traditional cinematic works. In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter, Fanning highlighted the artistic merit of her current projects, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging diverse storytelling in cinema.

Fanning’s remarks come during a time when genre films are increasingly finding their place in awards discussions. She pointed to notable examples, such as Demi Moore‘s acclaimed performance in The Substance and the groundbreaking narrative of Everything Everywhere All at Once. “It was incredibly deserved for her to get acknowledged for that film. Everything Everywhere All at Once— that was so bold and new,” Fanning stated.

While the landscape is evolving, Fanning noted that many genre films, particularly those featuring female leads, often remain overlooked. She mentioned previous entries like Prey and Smile 2, which starred Naomi Scott, as examples of films that received little recognition despite their artistic contributions. “For every genre film that gets recognition, there are just as many that get overlooked,” she remarked, expressing hope for a continued shift in how these films are perceived.

Fanning believes that the industry is beginning to broaden its view on what constitutes cinema. “We are pushing towards opening it up a little bit more,” she explained. “Just because it’s genre, I don’t think that people should be biased. A film is a film!” Her perspective reflects a desire to cultivate creativity, particularly for young directors and their innovative ideas, without adhering to rigid criteria of success.

In discussing her role in Predator: Badlands, Fanning described the dual challenge of portraying two characters while navigating the demanding physicality of the film. “I am playing two characters in Predator, and I saw it as a real acting challenge,” she shared. The actress detailed the physical requirements of her role, which included being harnessed to co-star Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. “We’re in wires and harnesses—but then also you have to deliver the comedic timing, the rhythm,” she noted.

Fanning praised her co-star’s talent, stating, “Dimitrius is incredible. He was there every day. Just because they covered his face, you can see the emotion through that. That’s because of him, and that’s pretty astonishing.” This collaboration not only showcases their individual talents but also highlights the teamwork involved in bringing genre films to life.

As the conversation around genre films continues to evolve, Fanning’s advocacy for recognition in this area underscores a larger movement within the industry. By challenging traditional perceptions and supporting diverse storytelling, she hopes to see a future where all cinematic expressions are valued equally.
