Selena Quintanilla’s Tragic Death: Autopsy Report Unveiled

The life of pop icon Selena Quintanilla ended tragically on March 31, 1995, when she was fatally shot in Corpus Christi, Texas by her former friend and business associate, Yolanda Saldivar. At just 23 years old, Selena, known as the “Queen of Tejano Music,” was killed amid a backdrop of betrayal and financial disputes. The recent Netflix documentary, Selena y Los Dinos, sheds new light on the details surrounding her murder, including revelations from the autopsy report.

In the months leading up to Selena’s death, Saldivar had been accused of embezzling thousands of dollars from both the singer’s fan club and her boutique, Selena Etc. This breach of trust culminated in Saldivar’s dismissal in March 1995, shortly before the fatal encounter. The situation escalated when Saldivar, after claiming she had been raped, persuaded Selena to meet her alone at a motel to discuss financial records. Despite Saldivar’s pleas for privacy, Selena brought her husband, Chris Pérez, along on the ill-fated trip.

On the day of the murder, Selena returned to the Days Inn motel to retrieve documents from Saldivar. After another attempt to obtain the financial records, Saldivar pulled out a .38-caliber revolver and shot Selena in the shoulder. Injured and desperate, Selena fled to the hotel lobby, seeking help. Despite immediate medical attention, she was pronounced dead at around 1:05 p.m. local time.

The aftermath of the shooting revealed Saldivar engaging in a standoff with police outside the motel, where she initially threatened to take her own life. After a tense ten-hour negotiation, she surrendered to authorities and was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Saldivar maintained that the shooting was accidental but was ultimately found guilty in October 1995 and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

The Nueces County Medical Examiner’s office conducted Selena’s autopsy just three hours after her death due to the public’s intense interest in the case. The report confirmed that Selena died from a gunshot wound to her lower right shoulder, with the official ruling being homicide. According to the autopsy, the cause of death was identified as “exsanguinating internal and external bleeding due to a perforating gunshot wound” to the chest.

Coroner Lloyd White explained, “It is my opinion that Selena Quintanilla Pérez, a 23-year-old woman, came to her death as a result of an exsanguinating internal and external hemorrhage, in other words massive bleeding, due to a perforating gunshot wound of the thorax (chest).” The bullet entered Selena’s back and traveled through critical areas, ultimately damaging her subclavian artery, which contributed to the severity of her injuries.

The report further detailed that blood was present on multiple areas of Selena’s clothing at the time of her death, emphasizing the brutality of the incident. The autopsy findings have added a new layer of understanding to the circumstances surrounding her tragic end, reminding fans and followers of the immense loss felt across the music industry.

As of now, Saldivar remains incarcerated in a women’s prison in Gatesville, Texas. Her recent request for parole was denied in March 2025, leaving her to serve her sentence while the legacy of Selena Quintanilla continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
