Arizona Diamondbacks Sign James McCann for $2.75 Million Deal
The Arizona Diamondbacks have secured the return of veteran backup catcher James McCann, signing him to a one-year contract valued at $2.75 million on March 15, 2025. This move comes as the team sought to fill the vacant backup catcher position, and McCann’s experience and recent performance made him an ideal choice.
McCann’s influence on the Diamondbacks has been widely acknowledged by both coaches and teammates. His presence has been noted as a positive force for the pitching staff and the overall clubhouse atmosphere. In an interview with AZCentral’s Nick Piecoro, Diamondbacks General Manager Mike Hazen highlighted the importance of McCann’s role in the team. “I think he was a good complement to Gabriel Moreno and a stabilizing force behind the plate,” Hazen stated. He emphasized that while McCann’s offensive performance, which included a batting line of .260/.324/.431 with five home runs in 137 plate appearances, was impressive, the primary focus of the signing was on defensive capabilities.
Despite finishing in the bottom third of Major League Baseball in team earned run average (ERA), ranked 23rd with a 4.49, the Diamondbacks experienced a noticeable improvement in their pitching output coinciding with McCann’s increased playing time. His ability to manage games and call pitches has proven advantageous, particularly as young catcher Gabriel Moreno continues to develop this critical skill. Hazen remarked, “Gabi has done a good job with it, but there were times last year when… it was about defense.”
The Diamondbacks’ coaching staff, including Manager Torey Lovullo, views McCann’s signing not as a challenge to Moreno, but rather as an opportunity for mentorship. Hazen clarified that the team envisions a complementary dynamic between the two catchers. Moreno, who is recognized as a promising player and holds a Gold Glove award, can benefit from McCann’s veteran insights and experience behind the plate.
McCann’s return to Arizona marks a pivotal moment for the Diamondbacks as they continue to build on their roster for the upcoming season. His experience and leadership are expected to foster growth among younger players, particularly at the catcher position. As the team gears up for the 2025 MLB season, the combination of McCann’s defensive prowess and Moreno’s offensive potential could prove to be a formidable asset for the Diamondbacks.
