Jaden Ivey Shines in Season Debut as Pistons Extend Winning Streak
Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey made a triumphant return to the court on November 4, 2023, after being sidelined for over ten months due to injuries and surgeries. In his first regular season game since January 1, Ivey contributed significantly to the team’s success, scoring 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting, along with two assists and a steal in just 15 minutes off the bench. His performance was crucial in securing a 129-116 victory against the Milwaukee Bucks, marking the Pistons’ twelfth consecutive win.
Ivey expressed his emotional journey back to the game, stating, “Just cherished the moment to be back out there tonight. It took a while for me to get used to it… But it was just so much gratitude to be out there again.” His absence stemmed from a broken fibula sustained during a game on New Year’s Day, which forced him to miss the remainder of the previous season. After a brief preseason appearance, discomfort in his right knee led to another surgery on October 16, 2023.
Pistons guard Cade Cunningham highlighted the importance of Ivey’s return, saying, “It’s like seeing him in his natural state… He looked really comfortable out there.” Cunningham himself had an impressive game, finishing with 29 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds. The team’s ability to integrate Ivey effectively into their lineup speaks to the hard work he has put in during his recovery.
Pistons Continue to Dominate
Ivey’s comeback coincides with one of the hottest stretches in the Pistons’ franchise history. Their current 12-game winning streak ties for the third-longest in the team’s history, just one short of the record of 13 set in the 1989-90 and 2003-04 seasons when the Pistons clinched NBA championships. Ivey remarked on the team’s progress, noting, “When I last played, it was so different… I feel like we found it as a team, a niche with the team and just connecting with the guys.”
Additionally, Detroit’s victory over Milwaukee snapped a 13-game losing streak against the Bucks, who had dominated their previous matchups by sweeping the series for the past three seasons. Cunningham emphasized the significance of breaking this streak, stating, “I don’t think any franchise should have that over ours. We take playing for the Pistons seriously.”
The Pistons’ transformation over recent seasons has been remarkable. Just two seasons ago, they finished with the worst record in the NBA at 14-68. Following their latest win, Detroit leads the Eastern Conference with a record of 14-2, showcasing their significant improvement.
Looking Ahead
Despite their current success, the team remains focused on growth. Center Jalen Duren acknowledged the journey ahead, saying, “Not everybody in here went through that with us, but the guys who were here truly understand and still feel, we got a lot to prove.” He added, “It feels good… but we still got a lot more room to go, and a lot more room to grow.”
As the season progresses, the Detroit Pistons are poised to build on their recent success, with Ivey’s return being a pivotal moment in their campaign. The team will look to maintain their momentum and continue to challenge the league as they aim for a deep playoff run.
