A Powerball ticket purchased at a gas station in Cabot, Arkansas, has won a staggering $1.817 billion jackpot in the drawing held on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2023. This win marks the end of a three-month stretch without a top-prize winner, with the winning numbers being 04, 25, 31, 52, 59, and the Powerball number 19.

The ticket was sold at a Murphy USA location, approximately 26 miles northeast of Little Rock, where the community of around 27,000 residents is now buzzing with excitement. As of Thursday, December 28, the gas station remained closed for the holiday, and no representatives were available to comment on the historic win.

The jackpot climbed to this unprecedented amount due to strong ticket sales, exceeding previous estimates and becoming the second-largest jackpot in U.S. history. The cash option for the winner is set at $834.9 million. According to the official Powerball website, this amount surpasses the largest Powerball prize of 2023.

Matt Strawn, Chair of the Powerball Product Group and CEO of the Iowa Lottery, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Congratulations to the newest Powerball jackpot winner! This is truly an extraordinary, life-changing prize.” He also noted the importance of every ticket sold, as proceeds support public programs and services nationwide.

Lottery officials confirmed that the identity of the winner will not be known until at least Monday, January 1, 2024, because the claims center is closed during the holiday period. According to Karen Reynolds, a spokesperson for the Arkansas Lottery, winners must contact the claims center to begin the process of claiming their prize.

The winning ticket follows a lengthy streak of 46 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner. The last time a Powerball jackpot was won occurred on September 6, 2023, when two players in Missouri and Texas shared a prize of $1.787 billion.

This is not the first time the Powerball jackpot has been won in Arkansas; the state previously celebrated a win in 2010. The last Christmas Eve jackpot victory occurred in 2011, while the game has also produced prizes on Christmas Day four times, with the most recent being in 2013.

The Powerball lottery is designed to generate substantial jackpots, with odds of winning set at 1 in 292.2 million. While these odds create large prizes, lottery officials emphasize that there are many smaller prizes with better chances of winning.

Ticket prices for the Powerball are set at $2, and the game is available in 45 states, along with Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The excitement surrounding this win has sparked interest among players, with many expressing impulsive decisions to purchase tickets as the jackpot grew.

As the community of Cabot awaits further details about the winner, the Powerball drawing has once again captured the public’s imagination, reminding everyone of the life-changing possibilities that come with a simple ticket purchase.
