Analysts See Promise in Pony AI’s Robotaxi Future Despite Risks
Pony AI Inc. (NASDAQ:PONY) has garnered attention from analysts who view the company’s long-term prospects in the robotaxi sector as promising, despite acknowledging several near-term risks. On December 16, 2023, Barclays analyst Jiong Shao initiated coverage of the stock with an Equal Weight rating and a price target of $15. Shao noted that while challenges persist in the autonomous vehicle industry, the technology for robotaxis is largely ready in China, suggesting a viable business model is emerging.
Just a day earlier, Macquarie also began coverage of Pony AI, assigning an Outperform rating with a significantly higher price target of $29. Analysts at Macquarie believe that 2026 will mark a turning point for profitability in the robotaxi market. They anticipate that Pony AI will be a key player in the commercialization of robotaxi services, projecting a tripling of its fleet size and a 20% decline in hardware costs, both of which are expected to facilitate a pathway to profitable operations.
The analysis provided by Eugene Hsiao, an analyst at Macquarie, highlights the potential market share for robotaxis in China. He stated, “Our benchmarking suggests robotaxis could reach 45% of the China mobility market share by 2035. Our base case is that Pony remains a top-two player in the Chinese robotaxi sector, which implies a $12.6 billion equity value.”
Pony AI specializes in autonomous mobility solutions, offering a range of services including AI-driven robotrucks and robotaxis, intelligent driving software, and vehicle integration solutions. While analysts express confidence in the company’s long-term trajectory, they also caution investors regarding the inherent risks associated with the evolving technology and market dynamics.
Despite the optimism surrounding Pony AI, some market observers believe there are AI stocks with greater potential for higher returns in a shorter timeframe. Potential investors are encouraged to explore various options in the AI sector before making financial commitments.
As the landscape for autonomous vehicles continues to evolve, Pony AI is poised to play a significant role in the future of robotaxi services in China, but the journey ahead may present challenges that need to be navigated carefully.
