Dr. Oz Critiques Medicaid as States Face Growing Healthcare Costs

During a recent address at the Sanford Health Annual Summit on the Future of Rural Health Care in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he highlighted that federal Medicaid spending has surged by 50% over the past five years. This rise is primarily linked to pandemic-era policies that remain in effect, impacting funding for education and social services.

Dr. Oz’s remarks drew attention to what he perceives as a troubling aspect of Medicaid financing. He stated that certain mechanisms, such as state-directed payments and provider taxes, allow some states to exploit the system to their advantage. “Certainly the legalized money laundering from state-directed payments and provider taxes, no matter what you might think about them, don’t align with the federal government and with state governments,” he said. He described the situation as a “grab bag” where states could claim varying amounts of federal funds due to differences in their financial capabilities.

Moreover, Dr. Oz emphasized the prevalence of fraud within both the Medicaid and Medicare programs. His approach to combatting this fraud involves focusing on the flow of money rather than pursuing individual offenders. “We’re actually chasing the money now, not the person,” he explained. This shift in strategy aims to work in collaboration with the Treasury and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to tackle these issues comprehensively.

During the address, Dr. Oz noted that CMS has successfully prevented approximately $4 billion from being misappropriated through these new tactics. He expressed confidence in the agency’s commitment to recovering misallocated funds and shutting down schemes that take advantage of systemic loopholes.

Dr. Oz remarked on the necessity of innovative solutions to support legitimate healthcare providers while addressing fraudulent activities. “We have to go after these programs, come up with clever ideas to help the good people who are trying to do the right thing, and separate the wheat from the chaff,” he stated.
