The Houston FIFA World Cup host committee is set to launch a new sustainability tour guide aimed at promoting environmentally friendly practices among local businesses in preparation for the tournament this summer. The initiative encourages hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality services to adopt sustainable measures by the end of February, ensuring they are featured in a guide for visitors attending the World Cup, which kicks off in June and will host seven matches at NRG Stadium.

This program, part of the broader initiative known as “New Year, New Hou,” seeks to empower local businesses to enhance their operations while welcoming a surge of global visitors. Elizabeth Carlson, chair of sustainability for the host committee, emphasized the significance of this opportunity, stating, “This is about making sustainable practices accessible and impactful for our local hospitality community. The FIFA World Cup is a once-a-generation opportunity, and we want to help Houston businesses not only prepare for an influx of global visitors but also strengthen their operations in ways that will benefit them and the community long after the final match is played.”

To qualify for inclusion in the sustainability tour guide, businesses must commit to specific sustainable practices as defined by the Houston host committee. These practices are categorized into four main areas: waste, energy, transportation, and nature initiatives. By completing an online survey outlining their commitments, businesses can improve their chances of earning a sustainability badge, which signifies their dedication to environmental stewardship.

The host committee offers various levels of commitment, allowing businesses to choose their preferred approach to sustainability. For instance, in the waste category, a low-effort commitment could involve replacing Styrofoam containers with recyclable packaging. A medium-effort commitment may include partnering with private recycling providers, while a high-effort commitment could introduce a reuse or “bring your own” container program.

For businesses aiming to achieve the highest-level sustainability badge, certification from an external sustainability organization, such as the Green Restaurant Association or Green Key, is required. The program is open to all hotels, motels, and restaurants operating within the boundaries of the Houston-Galveston Area Council.

The application process for businesses interested in participating is open until February 28, 2024. This initiative not only highlights Houston’s commitment to sustainability but also sets a precedent for future events, demonstrating how large-scale tournaments can incorporate environmentally responsible practices. By fostering a culture of sustainability, the Houston FIFA World Cup host committee aims to leave a lasting positive impact on both the local community and the environment.
