Minneapolis Officials Dismantle Autonomous Zone Following Shooting Incident

Minneapolis city officials dismantled a temporary “autonomous zone” established by activists on Thursday night, following a shooting incident involving an ICE agent. The area, located in the southeastern part of the city, was declared a “no-go zone” for law enforcement by some groups, who erected barricades to block access.

The tensions escalated after the shooting of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old woman, by an ICE agent. Good allegedly accelerated her vehicle towards the officer, resulting in injuries. In the aftermath, activists mobilized quickly, creating barricades from trash bins, Christmas trees, and other materials, effectively hindering access to the neighborhood for residents and emergency responders.

According to independent journalist Nick Sortor, makeshift barricades were positioned at every intersection, with individuals acting as “guards.” The activists set up tables under pop-up canopies, providing food, drinks, and medical supplies, while also lighting fires for warmth. The scene drew comparisons to the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) in Seattle, which had seen similar unrest in 2020.

As the situation unfolded, city officials took action to remove the barricades early on Friday, prioritizing access for emergency services. Authorities emphasized the need for safe passage, especially in light of a recent three-alarm fire in the vicinity. “Safety has to come first—every second matters when lives are on the line,” stated Interim Chief Melanie Rucker of the Minneapolis Fire Department.

The decision to clear the area aimed to restore access for local residents and first responders, who had expressed concerns about their ability to navigate the neighborhood safely. While the barricades were removed, a memorial of candles and flowers was left intact to honor Good.

City officials are now focusing on maintaining order and ensuring that residents feel secure in their community, as the events of the past days highlight ongoing tensions surrounding law enforcement and immigration policies in Minneapolis.
