A new grocery store, El Pueblito Abarrotes and Ice Cream, opened on February 24, 2026, in Mount Greenwood, offering residents a variety of Mexican staple ingredients, fresh produce, and delightful treats such as ice cream and paletas. Located at 10639 S. Pulaski Road, the establishment aims to serve as a community hub, according to its owner, Mary Mejia.

Mejia, who is 23 years old, emphasizes her desire to create a neighborhood gathering spot rather than just another grocery store. “I like that name because that’s what I want to be — a neighborhood spot,” she stated. The business is organized into two main sections: one dedicated to ice cream, paletas, and milkshakes, and the other focused on groceries.

Community Roots and Inspiration

Originally from Burbank, Mejia has strong ties to the Mount Greenwood area. Her father, Alejandro Mejia, owns Sunrise Breakfast and Lunch, located just a few doors down from her new store. Having worked alongside her father, she developed a deep appreciation for the local community. “Being in Sunrise, I got to meet a lot of people. Everybody is so nice here,” she shared.

When a rental space became available next to her father’s restaurant, Mejia seized the opportunity to establish her own business. The store features shelves stocked with canned goods, cooking supplies, and household essentials, including paper towels and cleaning products.

“I thought this would be such a nice place to have something sweet in the neighborhood,” Mejia explained. Her vision includes creating a family-friendly environment where children and pets are welcome.

Affordable and Welcoming Atmosphere

Inspired by her father’s entrepreneurial spirit, Mejia has always aspired to run a small business. “Watching my dad be an owner, I always thought to myself it would be nice to open something of my own,” she said. Her goal is to maintain affordable prices and foster a welcoming space for all community members.

El Pueblito Abarrotes and Ice Cream operates from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. After months of preparation, Mejia is eager to welcome customers. “One of the phrases I always say is, ‘I love people,’” she said. “Even though I can be a little shy at times, I really do love people and interacting with them.”

With a commitment to serving the Mount Greenwood community, Mejia hopes her store will become a go-to destination for residents seeking quality products and a friendly atmosphere.
