Record Number of Americans Juggle Two Full-Time Jobs

The number of Americans holding two full-time jobs has surged to 476,000, marking the second-highest level on record. This figure, reported by The Kobeissi Letter, is just shy of the all-time peak of 488,000 recorded in December 2025. This shift highlights significant changes in the U.S. labor market, as dual full-time employment has doubled since 2020, surpassing the previous record of 416,000 workers during the dot-com bubble in July 2000.

Multiple Jobholding Reaches New Heights

More broadly, the trend of multiple jobholding is also rising. The total number of individuals juggling jobs across all categories has reached 8.77 million, an increase of 700,000 workers compared to the peak seen in 2008. This surge illustrates the growing necessity for many Americans to supplement their incomes amid rising living costs.

According to data from WalletHub as of September 2025, geographic disparities in work hours persist. Workers in Alaska average the highest weekly hours at 41.6, reflecting both regional economic conditions and the pressures facing workers nationwide.

Younger Generations Seek Financial Stability

The trend of dual employment has been particularly pronounced among younger workers. Many in Generation Z are increasingly adopting what is termed “income stacking” as a strategy for financial stability. Despite rising unemployment rates, many young Americans are working over 60 hours each week to manage their expenses.

A survey conducted by Fiverr reveals that 46% of Gen Z participants express concern about their ability to earn a comfortable living. Furthermore, nearly two-thirds of respondents believe that having multiple income streams is essential for achieving financial security.

This trend underscores a growing reality for many households across the United States, where economic pressures have intensified, forcing individuals to adapt their work patterns to meet financial demands.
