On a routine visit to a thrift store in the San Francisco Bay Area in December 2025, she stumbled upon the luxurious handbag. The store was relatively quiet that Wednesday, which is when it typically opens for the week. Among the various items, two woven leather bags caught her attention, but one stood out due to its exceptional quality.

Utilizing Technology to Confirm Authenticity

Initially, Boelen thought the bag might be a replica, as many imitations of Bottega Veneta exist. However, upon closer inspection, she noted the weight of the bag and the quality of the leather, which indicated a potential authentic piece. To verify her instincts, she used Google Lens to search for the bag online. This search led her to the Vestaire Collective, where she found the same style, confirming its rarity and retired status.

In her excitement, Boelen recorded her discovery, expressing her disbelief as she located the serial tag inside the bag. After purchasing it for $8, she later authenticated the bag using an app called Authentic Detective, which provided a certificate of authenticity. Research indicated that the bag’s market value was around $3,000.

Despite mixed reactions to her find—some viewers on social media expressed that they found the bag unattractive—Boelen plans to keep it. She views it as a timeless piece that she hopes to pass down through generations.
