Amazon Pulls AI Dub from Banana Fish After Backlash
Amazon has removed an English dub featuring AI voice actors from the anime series Banana Fish following significant backlash from viewers and industry professionals. The controversy ignited on social media as fans noticed the ‘Audio Languages’ option included a selection labeled ‘English [AI beta]’, prompting widespread criticism about the use of artificial intelligence in voice acting.
The backlash intensified after a video showcasing the AI-generated performances circulated online, drawing attention to the perceived shortcomings of synthetic voice work. Many viewers expressed their dissatisfaction, emphasizing the importance of human actors in delivering authentic performances. One Twitter user encapsulated the sentiment, stating, “Good riddance, glad a precedent was set for large companies that AI dubs are ridiculously unpopular & should be avoided.”
Rapid Response from Amazon
In light of the uproar, Amazon acted swiftly, eliminating the AI voice option by December 1, 2025. As of that date, there is no English language option available for Banana Fish, highlighting the company’s responsiveness to consumer feedback. This move reflects a growing trend in the entertainment industry, where AI technologies are often met with skepticism, particularly in creative roles traditionally filled by humans.
The situation surrounding Banana Fish is part of a larger discourse on AI in the creative sectors. While AI-generated content has gained traction in various industries, the reception has not been universally positive. Earlier in the year, another anime production, Sekiro: No Defeat, faced criticism over the use of AI-generated art. However, the anime streamer Crunchyroll later confirmed that the 2026 series will be “a fully hand-drawn 2D animation” and assured fans that AI would not be involved in the creative process, including voice acting.
Crunchyroll’s CEO, Shams Purini, emphasized the value of human contributions in storytelling, stating, “We consider them to be creators because they are contributing to the story and plot with their voice.” This perspective mirrors the sentiments of many in the industry who advocate for the preservation of traditional artistic roles amidst the rise of AI technologies.
Looking Ahead for Anime Fans
Despite the concerns surrounding AI, anime enthusiasts have plenty to anticipate in the upcoming months. Notable releases include Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End season 2 and Jujutsu Kaisen season 3, both set to debut in January. These series promise to continue the rich tradition of hand-drawn animation and human performances that many fans cherish.
The Banana Fish incident serves as a pivotal moment in the ongoing conversation about the role of AI in entertainment. As companies navigate the integration of technology into creative fields, the response from audiences will undoubtedly shape future practices. For now, the removal of the AI dub highlights a clear preference for authenticity in voice acting, reaffirming the essential role of human actors in the anime industry.
