Beloved Educator Madeline Crews Passes Away at 93

Madeline “Maddy” Crews, a cherished educator and community member, passed away peacefully at her home on January 23, 2026, at the age of 93, following a brief illness. Born Maddalena Valentina Peirona on July 15, 1932, in the mountain village of Morinesio, Italy, she immigrated to the United States with her mother in 1933 to join her father, Tomaso Peirona, in Santa Cruz, California.

Madeline devoted much of her life to education and her community. After graduating from Santa Cruz High School in 1950, she attended San Jose State University, where she earned a degree in Education. She began her teaching career at Laurel Elementary School, later moving to Westlake Elementary, where she inspired countless students over a remarkable 30-year tenure.

Celebrated Teacher and Philanthropist

Madeline’s influence extended beyond the classroom. She was known for her dedication to Holy Cross Church and participated actively in several philanthropic organizations, including the Italian Catholic Federation (ICF), the TTT organization, and Delta Kappa Gamma, a society for women educators. Her volunteer work included significant contributions to the Holy Cross Food Pantry, Grey Bears, and I-You Venture, demonstrating her commitment to serving others.

In retirement, Madeline embraced a vibrant lifestyle. She and her husband, Jerry Crews, whom she married on April 29, 1955, enjoyed swing dancing and were regulars at Wally’s Swing World. Their shared passion for travel took them around the globe, visiting destinations in Europe, Africa, North and South America, and Asia. Madeline held a deep affection for her Italian heritage and cherished the times spent reconnecting with family and culture in Italy.

Madeline was a devoted wife and mother, nurturing her daughters, Lisa and Amy, with love and support. She is remembered fondly by her family, which includes her brother Alfred Peirona, her step-daughter Sue Shingler, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family expressed gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Hospice of Santa Cruz County and Visiting Angels during her final days.

Legacy and Memorial Services

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for March 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Mission Santa Cruz. The family plans to host a Celebration of Life in July to honor Madeline’s legacy. In lieu of flowers, they request donations be made to the Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Siena Maternity House, or another charity of choice.

Madeline Crews leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and love, remembered by many whose lives she touched throughout her long and fulfilling life.
